He let me stand next to him and touch his back, but he hates having his face touched at all.

That'll come with time well spent. Are you trying to work with his feet yet? I don't mean lifting, just touching legs.

Thank you Drafty!! He is soooooo cute and it kills my heart that has been through what ever it was to make him so head shy.

I am going to take the advice of another poster <forgive me for not remembering your name> and just stand next to him and pet his back etc and leave his head alone. Hopefully that will do the trick. Also he has a bad eye and I think that maybe part of it. IT looks like he hurt it somehow and it healed buy he's still head shy because of it.

Not yet, Im trying to get him to stand still when I approach him. He is completely wild except for wearing a halter and you can see where the hair has been rubbed away from others pulling on him. I refuse to do that. I want him to stand still and realize I wont hurt him first.

Every time I walk up to him, he either backs up hard or walks away. He hasn't offered to kick or bite so that is cool!!

all my rescues came head shy. being on the slaughter blocka nd being messed with by rough people will do it. it took me months to get them over it. Now 8 months later i am able to grab my belgians head lift it up and kiss his nose and rub between his eyes.and i love rubbing his ears he don't mind either. Good luck with him and great advice i saw that and didn't want to repeat it. keep us updated on him

Sorry, I was under the impression he was trained but poorly cared for. Yes, it will take some time. Those little guys are all about self preservation, though some think it's stubborness. Sounds like , calm, quiet, no fast moves, especially on his blind side. Just a suggestion, but working up his neck and inch at a time, as he'll tolerate. I've never known any to be real lovey, dovey, like a horse can be. When they trust you though, they'll work hard for you, as long as your, what they consider, fair.

I thought he was from what the girl told me. She made him seem great, which he is but not in the training or ground work area.

I was told he was a mini, he is not a mini. He is a small standard donkey.
I was told he was in great shape. He is not.
Was told he was a gelding, which he is thank god.
Was told he was gentled but just a "bit" shy. Since he hasnt tried to bite or kick, I will accept that he "has" a gentle nature.

My fault for not going to see him before hand. But either way, he is mine now and he is going to get the best care I can give him along with lots of loving.

The way I look at it, is he needed someone to take the time to gain his trust and love. That he needed someone who would make sure he is taken care of, UTD on everything and would be happy in his forever home.
I just happen to be the lucky one!
