Whether the papers actually make much difference in the quality of the horse or not most people I know won't buy anything without papers. Usually because they want to take them to breed shows or have more registered foals from them, sometimes(like me) to just know what their breeding is as well as having a true record of age, and for some just cause registered horses are supposedly better. An unregistered horse of equivalent quality here usually sells for several $100 less than one with papers. Although currently not much of anything is selling for over $1000 and then only if it's already well broke or has impressive breeding(with papers) and conformation. If you never plan to sell or show at AQHA shows then papers don't matter a whole lot especially if you already have the horse. If you don't get the papers though and can't check for certain bloodlines I'd go ahead and test for genetic disorders like hypp to avoid surprise problems in the future.

Thanks everybody. These help. I doubt the youngest will go far anyway. We bought him when he was barely 3 months old, he nearly died and he has several scars where he was badly mishandled to say the least. The other two are pretty nice. I wish I had papers on the palomino, he was so undernourished when we got him that he was white white and I am not sure the 'paint' is a quarter horse. His ears are really weird. But he is a looker and coming along nicely. Thanks for the input.
