Exclamation Need Tips on Helping Mare Accept a baby

Ok well here is the deal we had a VERY preggo mare at our barn... soo one day she went into labour... an hour and a half later nothing was happin and blood started pouring out her vulva so we called the vet out well the vet tried to pull the baby out but kept finding legs because the baby was backwards they needed to turn the baby around.. so he couldn't turn the baby around so they took the mare to the vet clinic

well the mare had twins inside her and they found out that they were both dead so the vet had to cut up the babys and take them out of her piece by piece. The vet still said the mare still might not have a chance to make it through......

and she did so within the next couple of days we got a call from that vet saying there was a baby at the clinic that was rejected by its mother and brought in to be put down but they just couldn't put the beautiful thing down so they asked us if we wanted to try to see if our mare would accept her

so she has let her drink her milk i guess once but she was twitched so that says alot...

We really need help and suggestions if there is anything we can do to get this mare to accept the baby or else the baby gets put down.. and she is a beautiful thinng... I will put pics up as soon as I get home to up load them onto photobucket... thanks for any help

Kendra

Hobbles so she can't kick it. Or a crush where the baby can stick it's head through and feed.

Or some vapor rub in the mares nose so she can't smell it isn't hers.

With cows, introducing a dog into the equation will often bring out the mother in one, may work with horses.

Is it full moon time again? Did the cereal truck overturn and fruitloops got spilt?

There was, but too late now. You skin the dead foal and use it's hide as a rug on the one you want it to accept.

I've heard of rubbing the mares poo on the foal, I seen it done when they were getting a mare to accept a new baby that wasn't hers, It took a few times but she finally accepted it. She was nursing an older colt that Needed to be weaned.

If you save a piece of the afterbirth and put it on the new foal she will most likely accept it. I'm guessing it is too late for that, but if you keep letting the foal nurse she should accept him. if she hasn't had a foal before she will realize it feels good to get that milk out of her udders. And if she has had a foal before she already knows what to do it's just a matter of getting her used to this one. You can try rubbing her manure on him. Or just very carefully let him nurse, then let her check him out. Did they need to twitch her or was it just a precaution? Sometimes mares that have had a baby or two will let any baby nurse. Or even try to steal other mares babies.

They needed to twitch her because she had kicked out at the foal a couple of times and she has had many babies before but I went out to the barn today and i didn't see the mare anywhere so I hope she didn't die becase she was not looking too goodd..ummm wish us all luck and lets hope she is still alive
