| Senior Member | Need Tips My Mare is Crazy
My mare is becoming more stubborn everytime i jump her. She loves to jump but when it comes to jumping with me she bales out on almost everyjump. She is stubborn so i have to wear spurs but most of the time she ignores them, meaning i have to resort to my crop. This makes her angrier and causes her to jog sideways or completely stop at the jumps. how can i get her to listen to me? all suggestions ar welcome. im getting desperate.

| Senior Member+ | she may not fully understand the spurs or the crop. how often are you jumping her? Make sure you're not jumping her too often... go back to flat work, work on being foward, supple and relaxed. then start encorporating some poles here and there (without focusing on them, just go over them at random), and build your way back up to small jumps. |

im jumping her about two or three times a week. the only thing that is wrong with those suggestions is that i am in lessons so i dont have much choice on how high i jump. i ride flat about 2 or three times a week and she is becomeing a perfect angel and we always place in flat classes at shows. when it comes to jumping she completely ignores me and does w/e the **** she wants. should i be trying a harsher bit, martingales, or draw reins? please all suggestions welcome

If it's only with jumping, have a good long look at how you're riding her. Are you confident going into the jumps? Do you catch her in the mouth when you land? Is she being overfaced with jumping heights? Does her tack change when you jump her? If you use a different saddle, I'd be looking at double checking it fits. Just because you're in a lesson, doesnt mean you don't have a choice on how high you jump. If you're having so many problems jumping your trainer should be taking you back to basics, not keeping on pushing when there's an obvious issue. | |

i am very confident going into the jumps i know there is nothing that will stand in our way when we can get our groove right and i know i dont catch her mouth when we land. it could be that she doesnt like the jump heights but for her the higher the better. when we do lower than 2'6 she gets sloppy and doesnt pick up her feet and i dont want her to lose form. we are jumping about 2'9 courses in most of our lessons. i ride in a group lesson and its hard for her to really focus on one specific person, and right now i dont have the money to pay for privates. the tack stays the same for all my riding. and she has actually gotten better about listening on the flat since i got my new saddle. if there are any other suggestions, please let me know.

get her confidence back--take the jumps down to cavelletti poles and walk, trot, and then canter back over them, and then praise her like crazy til she's big-headed and think's she's the coolest thing ever. make it fun and interesting; throw them in there randomly, and, like I said, pet her and tell her she's amazing. if she won't walk over them at first with you on her, get off and walk her over them in hand the main point is don't make a huge deal out of it (about jumping, I mean)--don't make it an unpleasant experience for her when she gets super confident, build them up super super slowly--move to cross rails barely bigger than a ground pole, etc etc. and talk to your trainer, tell her to put the jumps down, anything--your trainer should be helping you through this problem. definately definately definately no harsher bit, martingales, or draw reins expecially--don't ever, ever ever jump in draw reins good luck! keep us updated |
