How much are you looking to spend? Because I have LOTS of items... with a very wide price range. =D Also... How old is she? English or Western? Does she show? If yes, what kind? What colour horse/breed? Any other significant details? |

Well, a gift basket/bag is always a good present. It opens itself up to lots of nice and relatively inexpensive gifties. You can start with the bag- make it part of the gift! An empty groom kit/ helmet bag/ boot bag/feed bucket/hay net etc. could be a unique exterior. But don't worry TOO much about the bag- anything will do. Here are some suggestions of what you can put in it (don't take ALL the suggestions, though. You'll be broke): Since it's for the horse, treats are a must. Buy a bag of Jumbo carrots or apples from the local Walmart a few days before giving the gift. FREE-OR, even better make it extra special by making your own horse treats! It's really easy, and a lot of fun. Here is a page of excellent recipes: http://www.sherlockfarms.com/horsetreats.htm Horses aren't fussy... any thing with oats and molasses will be a favourite. If her tack room isn't heated and you have cold winters, I'm sure that Rena would appreciate a bit warmer- think handwarmers, but for bits. You slip the bit inside, and it stays warm so that the horse doesn't get cold metal in the mouth. If you have a Winners nearby, you can sometimes buy discount Baker products. They may be a little Englishy, but if she's into purses etc they are REALLY cute.... don't get them from the tack store, though. TOO EXPENSIVE. =) If there is something that she always looses, throw one of those in there too. (ie. I am ALWAYS losing crops, so for me, somebody would put one in, and maybe put a note around it saying "Now don't loose this one!" If she rides with a crop, buy a sparkly one! I LOVE my sparkle crop. =D (all spiffy tack is wonderful. I'm a hunter rider, so our apparel is typically very reserved. So when I DO bust out my hot pink, leopard print saddle pad, it's just a lot of fun... buy her something out of the ordinary) Out of the ordinary... a really crazy pair of leg wraps, or a wild saddle pad... Western riders have rhinestones bridles, right? You could buy a piece for that. Or coloured stirrup leathers! I don't know about Westerners, but my conservative Hunter coach would have a coronary if she saw those. If interested, you may need to shop around online, they can be hard to come by. Grooming supplies are always appreciated, especially on a light coloured horse (such as a palamino). You could consider Cowboy Magic, Show Sheen, Hoof Oil, Miracle Groom, Fly Spray, or Blue Rinse Shampoo (which is marketed for humans with grey hair, but works wonders on manure stains) FREE- If you're at all artistic, draw her horse for her. I'd love illustrations of my babies. Or kindly ask an artistic friend to do it for you (have them draw from a favourite picture). FREE- If her horse wears shoes, talk to her coach or ferrier. Next time Rena is reshod, keep one of the shoes, and clean it up for her. It's a really nice keepsake when the horse is eventually sold. Again, if the winters are cold... Bag Balm is neat, or moisturizer... possibly paired with an inexpensive pair of lined gloves. Engraved Name Plates!! Or a stall door sign. Useful- you never run out of leather tack that you be labeled with a classy name plate. Alternative: Tiny round dog tags that have initials on them. Also very nice. Hoof Picks... like crops, go missing like crazy. Also, other grooming tools. Love brushes and cordless clippers. Height and weight tapes are useful.... maybe not to an 11 year old? Depends what is important to her. A treat pocket (Cashel makes them). They clip to your belt and hold treats. How convenient! If you are handy with a sewing machine, you could make one without too much trouble. Horseopoly! Entertaining, and you could play it together. Belt or belt buckle Get her a bag of chocolates... label it Manure. Help a horse in need... Canyon Creek Farm Horse Rescue has a herd of plush ponies and one of them can be yours when you make a donation of $25 or $40. Proceeds go to Canyon Creek's rescue efforts. There are lots of ponies to choose from in this furry band of chestnuts, bays, pintos, blacks and roans. Products that benefit cancer http://horses.about.com/gi/dynamic/o...cer-c-390.html More than anything, be creative and have fun with it. Your friend will love it because a) it's from you; and b) you really thought about it... and you included her horse! Maybe, with every item, write a little explanation as to why it made you think of her and her horse... it's make everything just a little bit more personal. (keep in mind, I'm an English girl, so some of these may not work. You know your friend and her discipline best, use your judgment) I'll let you know if I think of more!
