Neck sweats should generally be only RIDDEN in, unless the horse has major crestiness. JOWEL SWEATS on the other hand should be generally put on for turn out, but i have never seen someone ride in a jowel one.

Being sorta uneducated in most horse things I have to ask what a neck sweat, a jowel sweat and cresty means, just wondering for my own knowledge.

Do you know the crest of the neck is? That top line of the neck? When a horse gets out of shape and quite chunky the crest gets fatty and hard and big.

A neck sweat goes over the neck(they come in different sizes/shapes(and colors!!)) and when the horse is worked the neck sweats out the fat making it slimmer.

I've used them on minis. I don't know what a jowel sweat is though, never used/seen one.

HJ- is your horse fat(are just getting into shape)? What breed is he? Is his crest hard(where you can't really squeeze it)?

I would only use a full neck sweat for work....or poss overnight overtop wool.....

Equestrian I use jowel sweats (on the off chance I use ANY lol) under a neck sweat when riding, but no never alone!

He is a tad overweight (cut grain rations and increased work) but not a huuuuuge amount. He has been off work for a year and is out of shape. He is a paso fino. His crest isn't really hard, it feels like stiff fat under his mane and if I grab it and jiggle it I can tell it's chunky. Here is a picture that I think shows it...

Superheroduck - I remember Holly (haltergirl_88) did a step by step on neck sweating. The bad thing is the pics are gone, but maybe you can PM her for a more detailed explaination or pictures to show what she does.

As for leaving it on 24x7, I would not do that with some of the neck sweats, you will just ask for the skin to be irritated and the mane to rub out.

What type of neck sweat did you get? Do you have a picture of it??

You are generally correct but it is impossible for a horse to sweat out fat. All a neck sweat does is make the area underneath the sweat to get hotter therefore that particular area will loose more water.

The problem with a sweat is that it is only temporary so in answer to your question

Never. Basically what you are doing with a neck sweat is dehydrating the area underneath the sweat. So as soon as your horses body can rehydrate the area it is going to get chunky again.

The ONLY way to get the horse to be less cresty is to get him in shape. And I in no way shape or form am trying to offend by saying this, I battle with my own horses weight problems constantly, she can get overweight off air but your horse is more then a tad overweight. Your pic isn't the best to determine BCS scores but I would say he is nearing an 8. Not obese yet but he's working on it. The only reason I say that is because some owners can have clouded eyes about their horses weight and there are SO many health problems that an overweight horse can be more susceptible too, lamness issues and founder are the first that come to mind.

Really the only thing that neck sweating is good for is if you have a horse that is in decent shape but because of genetics just seems to keep all their extra weight in their neck. For example with some stallions you can see thier ribs but they can still get an abnormally large crest. For this kind of horse a neck sweat would be beneficial right before a show. But right after the show he will go right back to looking the way he did.

And for the health and safety of the horses skin a sweat should only be kept on for small amounts of time, like right before durring and after excercie. They shouldn't wear it straight for a week.

But if I were you I wouldn't worry about the sweat at all. Just excercise and less feed and trying to get the weight down is the only answer to fix the problem long term.
