Talking Neck Reining

I have a new horse and want to teach her to neck rein. Does anyone have suggestions on the best way to teach this process. I am new to horses and riding and am trying very hard to learn everything I can.

THe way I've taught it, you neck, then you direct rein. Neck, direct EVERY TIME. Eventually the horse figures out, if I move when the rein is applied, they don't Pull my mouth!!!

But also, you want to add leg in there. Leg, neck, and then direct rein.

Also, so you know, to go right, you put the left rein on the neck. TO go left, you put the right rein on the neck.

Also, the best way to teach this is in a Curb bit. Reason is because these are MADE for neck reining. Horses understand the neck rein much better because the bit is being communicated to slightly with the shift of the reins.

But it can be taught in a snaffle, just not as quickly.

yep, pretty well said! I'm just teaching my horse to neck rein also and that's basically what I've been doing. Just use both reins when turning, the outside one as neck reining and the inside as direct. Also use the outside leg pressure.

Yep, Just what BW said.

You may add shift in there.

For a right turn:
Shift your seat to the right, apply left leg, apply left rein to the neck, apply direct pull right rein.
