Navicular or founder

What is the difference between founder and navicular? I know how founder is caused but how is navicular caused? Are they born with it?

Thanks for the link Haas. My friend has a horse that has some rotation of the coffin bone. He had x-rays and now the vet says it is not navicular but somehting else. But some how navicular came up last summer. Needs its heals elevated, toes "rounded off," and new balance (I think) shoes. He is only 6-7 and the owner doesn't really remember him being "off" when she first got him as a colt (2-3 yrs old). This is just really confusing to me.

If the coffin bone is rotated then that is founder.

He could of course have navicular as well. At that point it would need to be determined if it was navicular syndrome or navicular disease.

That can be a result of founder, or it can be a result of poor trimming that dumps the horse on his toes.

I'd love to know what he said

HUH? The CB is rotated, but the vet wants the heels raised to dump the CB on the toe even MORE?

[quote]toes "rounded off," and new balance (I think) shoes.
"rounded off" hopefull means shortened. This likely means the toes are too long. Natural Balance shoes can be a good way to help speed up this process but ONLY IF the farrier knows how to apply the NB trim. ONLY.

Now, the only other thing I can think of that would necessitate raising the heels would be if the coffin bone is rotated BACKWARD, which causes a bullnose profile when looking at the foot from the side. Could that be it?
