Natural Horsemanship

I am new to this forum and I was just wondering how many of you do natural horsemanship stuff?

I have ridden horses my entire life, but after a break for college, I just got back into it. I have a troubled horse, he was abused by his previous owner, which is part of the reason that I took a break during college. It was just too hard to go to school and basically restart an older horse (he's 10). Just when I was about to sell him, my friend moved up here and came to the resue. She teaches natural horsemanship, it's kind of Parelli stuff, with her own ideas. It's great! In two months time we have taken a horse that you couldn't lead, saddle, brush, really even touch, and now you'd think he'd been doing it his whole life. He is a completely different horse and I love being around him.
I was just wondering if any one else out there has done any of this stuff.

I do John Lyons and Clint ANderson type training (with my own twist of course>> )

I find parelli takes too long for results that I need with problemed horses that are not my own. Great for in between stuff and to do things different for a while, but I need results and need them quick before the horse gets bored or the owner comes back and complains about costs and time.

Lyons and Anderson work just as well, and you get PERFORMANCE type results, not just goof off, trail results.

I do agree, Parelli takes a long time, that's what's cool about my friends training program, it has the same time of stuff, but it takes about half the time.

She teaches classes that meet once a week for two hours, and in a months time, her students can send in there level 1 video, so really it takes about eight hours (of course you have to practice at home) to get to that level.
When i first started, I didn't think that my horse or I would be able to do it, but we are already jumping 18" fences and Shotgun is doing spins and learning sliding stops. This from a horse who two months ago couldn't even be saddled.
I have really learned to stop doubting my horses ability, as well as mine.

I'm a HUGE fan of NH. I have't spoken of it much, (If I even mentioned it all) but I used to specialize in gentling problem and abuse cases. I couldn't have accomplished what I did w/o NH.

I had the pleasure of seeing Clinton Anderson working, and working with a pony that I have worked with. I can say first hand that his method is wonderful. He is probably my favourite nh trainer. I like Parelli as well, but just to infuse into what I'm doing for fun.

Any of the NH books from any of the trainers can be helpful, you just have to find a trainer that you like, look on their websites and see what style you like best, some do a lot more ground work, some do a lot more rider-refinement. You should look at some of the big online book stores, like amazon or powells, they usually have very cheap used books and you could get a couple to see what you like, and you wouldn't have to pay a lot for it.
