mystery Swellings

About a month or so ago Ladybug started swelling in the throat latch area.
Hauled her to the vet the next day and the swelling had already gone down. Vet treated her as if it was an Allergy because the swelling wasn't really visible. Gave her Recover, Dexamethazone and sent me home with Three days of azium.

That helped for about a week and then the swelling came back.

Hauled her BACK to the vet, We took her temp and it was normal but he decided to treat it like an infection. so she got feed through Tucoprim (Trimethalsufa) and during the time she was getting that the swelling went down again.

She's been off the antibiotics about a week and the swelling has reappeared.

the symptoms she does NOT have are
1. NO temperature
2. NO coughing
3. NO runny nose NO Serious discharge at all. only occasional light clear normal type discharge.
4. NO eye discharge
5. NO holding of the head crooked like an ear/guteral pouch infection
6. NO sustained increase in swelling It fluxuates from almost not visible to fairly large.
7. NOT ALWAY symetrical. Some times only one side is large and other times Both sides are large.
8. NOT off her feed.she's eating everything like normal and diving right in to all feeds.
9. NO difficulty breathing even when the swelling is fairly large.

Basically she doesn't have "symptoms" of an infection.

She's going back to the second opinion vet soon for an endoscope and ultrasound. We will also do an additional CBC. First Vet thinks it might be clogged or blocked lymph nodes. Second opinion vet wants to rule deep sequestered infection.

So anyone else have an issue similar to this or have any other suggestions?

I had a filly at the track that had some clear discharge only once in awhile...no coughing, or temp...but she wasnt herself... cant for the life of me remember if there was any swelling in her throat latch...I dont think so..

I had her scoped and she was an 8 out of ten...loaded with mucus...so maybe scoping her will settle it... I did have the mucus cultured to fine the right meds to treat.

Stupid question, but I have to ask... any way her halter could be to tight?

nope not related to halter as she has been out in the pasture (with three or four other horses who do NOT have any symptoms) and has only had a halter one when I catch her and take her out of the pen. The swelling is present without a halter on.

And as far as this mare goes, She is EXACTLY herself. There's nothing unusual about her EXCEPT the swellings as they go up and down.

Well, looks like you named it right...mystery...not funny I know though... hopefully vet #2 will find the cause, and it's something simple, and cheap!

I'm having a CBC done first then I'm having a Dental check up ( she's due anyway) and then if we still can't find anything its a 2 hour haul to get her scoped and ultrasounded.
