Question My stallionish-gelding

Dear HGS'ers,
I recently moved my *gelding* to a new barn and we kept him in the stud run until he became settled. After like 3 days we moved him to his new pasture with my pony, Merri Legs, 2 mare, Suzie and Cindy, and another gelding, Bohdi. So I put my *gelding* in with these horses and supervised them for about a half an hour. They ran around and play fought but nobody was hurt and then they all settled down and started grazing together. Toby was kind of apart from the group but he was just exploring.

So the next day:
I go out to the barn and notice that Cindy was in heat. Not a problem, Toby's a gelding and nothing would come of it. So I feed all of the horses and I grain and work Toby. When I put him back in the pasture he kinda hung around Cindy but she is like the babysitter of the group and helps new horses find friends and stuff, so I didn't think anything of it.

The next day:
I go out to the barn about 5 or 6 in the evening to find that Toby is back in the stud run by himself. I ask the BO about it and she explains that he was acting studly towards Cindy. She says that Toby was super protective of Cindy and that when the other mare (who is owned by the same owner and the two horses are friendly towards each other), Suzie, came to see how Cindy was, Toby went after her. He really hurt her. She has cuts and scrapes but the owners are notified and I put medicine on it and such. Such a shock as that was, The BO also told me that Toby had been fighting with the other gelding, Bohdi.

So I'm wondering if something is wrong with Toby? I bought Toby at a public auction and I have no idea anything about him. He is a great horse, well behaved, and great to ride. He is 6 and has a great pedigree! But I was wondering if maybe he had an undescended testicle that wasn't taken care of? I also noticed that he is peeing on his legs and belly like my mare does when she is in heat. What do you guys think??
Diva
PS thanks for the help!!!!

Definitely take a testosterone test and look into him being a cryptorchid.

I recently had gotten a new horse who acted the same way , tried to mount a mare, control his 'herd', would charge at other horses, people. He also had fluid coming from his penis (I think that is what you are describing as well? It got all over his back legs and such for my 'gelding') - as well as it being erect more than a gelding should. So we pulled a test and low and behold he was one. He was quickly returned to the owner.

It's a $2,000 operation to remove an undescended testicle , so hopefully that is the last possible explanation.

some geldings who are 100% gelded will still act studly and try and mount mares, be overprotective etc. His behavior does not sound too bad right now, but you can still get a testorone test done to see if he is a crypt.

You're right. It is just the fluid that really gets me, as that was what really led us to get the test , and in fact determine that my 'gelding' was a cryptorchid.

If the horse has really popular and huge lines, google is a good asset. You might be able to find out if other people have had crypt issues with his bloodlines.

Yikes, like you said I'd definitely get that looked into! I have seen proud-cut geldings act similarly, but it could be other things.

Nothing is probably wrong with Toby. There is a reason that well managed boarding facilities offer separate mare and gelding pastures. Geldings produce testosterone too. Perhaps a separate gelding only pasture would be a good solution? Good luck with your horse.

He could be proud cut. That is when the vets leave some of the male parts in, which gives them enough testosterone to act like they are still stallions. Or maybe he has just taken up with the mare and wants to protect her.
I agree with Brina I would definatly get a testosterone test done.

I tend to steer away from putting geldings in with mares at all. What you are describing is not uncommon. I have a gelding that will actually mount and penetrate a mare flagging his tail when done and he is not proud, crypt or any of the like.

I used to have a gelding that always acted a little stud like in the spring, he would mount my mare and strut around and act very high and mighty, as summer came on, he turned into a gelding again.
