I always thought a "full book" meant that the stallion is no longer available for stud that year as well. I take it to mean that the owner is only allowing the stallion to breed to a limited number of outside mares and all of those openings have been filled for the current year.

I think it could be important to a mare owner if they wanted to see if the stallion was in demand, but I could also see it as a bit of a marketing tool for the stud owner. If their stallion has a "full book" he "must" be good and by using that, they might be able to get some mares booked in advance for next year.

I think the idea of allowing a stallion to have no more than say 10 or 15 foals a year. I especially like seeing stallion owners who accept mares "subject to approval" as long as they are looking to approve mares with good conformation, temperament, and pedigrees. I like the idea of a stallion owner being just as careful and picky as mare owners should be because I want to see better horses on the market and a lot less "surplus" so-so horses out there.

Here was another explanation given on another forum as well:

Quote:
Consider this hypothetical...

TrueColors Farm has ownership of 10 fractional interests in Stallion A...who is syndicated into 40 fractional interests. TrueColors Farm (since it is also the Standing Farm) is also entitled (per syndicate agreement) to 8 nominations per breeding season to Stallion A.

Each fractional interest carries a bonus nomination (for whatever reason)...thus 2 nominations are assigned to each of the 40 fractional interests. As a result, for starters TrueColors (the Standing Farm) is entitled to 20 nominations (2 per each of its 10 fractional interests in Stallion A)...PLUS 8 nominations (per syndicate agreement) since it is the Standing Farm..

When all 28 of TrueColor's nominations (for the particular breeding season) are sold and/or spoken for...voila, Book Full.

Regardless of the Book Full connotation, there are potentially many nominations still available...possibly (although unlikely) as many as 60 (based on this hypothetical).

This is just one scenario re: Book Full.
I am still tryin to digest what all of this means though ...

I happen to know that some owners breed 20 mares in a year, 15 of them being their own. SOrry but that does not impress me.
Then I see that there are other stallions that breed 100 mares in a year....have no idea how many of those are stallion owners mares...but I am not sure if that impresses me either.
If I like a stallion, its because I like it. I coulnt care less if 2 or 200 other people have bred their mares to him.
