Lightbulb My rescue mare! Long thread. But worth it!

I HAD CALLED A LOCAL RESCUE ABOUT WANTING A HORSE, AND TOLD THE LADY I WOULD KEEP IN TOUCH. SO A FEW MONTHS LATER I CALLED HER BACK AND SHE WAS TRYING TO HELP ANOTHER RESCUE ORGANIZATION FIND A HOME FOR A 12YR OLD TW CROSS...FOR THE 3RD TIME. I WAS HESITANT, BECAUSE SHE WAS RETURNED SO OFTEN AFTER THESE PEOPLE HAD MADE LIFELONG COMMITMENTS. THE FIRST PERSON RETURNED HER, BECAUSE THEIR DAUGHTER WOULD NOT BOND WITH HER...HOW RIDICULOUS. YOU DO NOT GET A HORSE TO BE SOMEONES BEST FRIEND. THE SECOND COUPLE RESCUED 4 HORSE AND RETURNED MY MARE AND A GELDING. THEY SAID MY MARE WAS TOLD BY THEIR TRAINER THAT BECAUSE SHE WAS THROWING HER HEAD UP WHILE RIDING THAT SHE WAS DANGEROUS. THE WOMAN RODE HER ONCE AND MY MARE TOOK HER BACK TO THE BARN. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THESE PEOPLE ARE GREEN. BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT, I AM GREEN, ALTHOUGH I HAVE BEEN AROUND HORSES MY WHOLE LIFE, BUT I AM NOT STUPID. I HAVE BEEN ON A QUEST TO ARM MYSELF WITH AN ARESENOL OF KNOWLEDGE. I TOOK THIS HORSE, AND WITH THE LITTLE THAT I KNOW, I HAVE DONE EXTENDED GROUND WORK WITH HER, AND SHE IS VERY RESPONSIVE TO ME. ALL OF OUR ROUND PEN WORK, AND GROUNDWORK HAS ENDED WITH BIG HUGS AND KISSES...AND SHE LOVES IT. SHE IS A SMART HORSE WHO HAD THE BAD LUCK OF ENDING UP WITH IGNORANT OWNERS. SHE THREW HER HEAD UP ON ME ONCE IN THE ROUND PEN, SHE DID IT BECAUSE SHE WAS NOT SURE WHAT I WAS ASKING HER. WHEN SHE FIGURED OUT MY CUES SHE WAS TROTTING WITH PRIDE. I HAVE NOT MOUNTED HER YET FOR SEVERAL REASONS, BUT I AM HOPING THAT AFTER THE VET COMES OUT TOMORROW THAT I CAN SAFELY TAKE HER OUT AND SADDLE HER UP AND LONG LINE REIN HER TO SEE IF MAYBE SHE HAS SADDLE OR BIT ISSUES. I WAS TOLD SHE WAS BARN SOUR, I HAVE TAKEN HER ON LONG WALKS, AND SHE IS FINE, SHE JUST WATCHES MY FACIAL EXPRESSIONS, AND AS LONG AS I DON'T LOOK APPREHENSIVE SHE IS RELAXED. SHE IS SO IN TUNE WITH EVERYTHING MY BODY IS TELLING HER IT IS LIKE WE ARE "ONE" WITH EACH OTHER. MY POINT IS, YOU CANNOT ALWAYS TAKE THE WORD OF SOMEONE ELSE. ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO A RESCUE HORSE. PEOPLE THINK THAT THEY CAN PAY A SMALL FEE AND JUST JUMP ON THEIR NEW HORSE, NEVER CONSIDERING THINGS THROUGH THE HORSES EYES. EDUCATE YOURSELF!!! IF IT IS WORTH HAVING A HORSE, THEN YOU NEED TO BE WILLING TO DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY HAVE THE BEST CARE POSSIBLE. IT IS LONG HARD WORK AND IT IS SO WORTH IT...BY THE WAY I DO ALL THIS WORK WITH MY HORSE BY MYSELF, ALTHOUGH I HAVE HELP WITH THE EDUCATIONAL ASPECTS...I WAS 280 POUNDS A MONTH AGO, AND SHE HAS MADE ME LOSE 30 POUNDS IN THE ROUND PEN..LOL. I ALSO HAD TO GET CORTIZONE INJECTIONS IN MY KNEES TO DO THIS. SHE IS MY INSPIRATION. I HAD NOT BEEN ABLE TO RUN IN 10 YEARS BEFORE I GOT HER, IN FACT I SPENT THE BETTER PART OF A YEAR IN MY HOUSE DOING CLOSE TO NOTHING. I OWE MY SANITY AND HEALTH TO THIS UNWANTED GIFT FROM GOD. I LOVE KAHLUA!!!

I have a rescue horse too - a recent adoption. She has issues, but likely fewer than your gal has. My mare is ten and we have no idea if she was ever saddle broke. This is my first official rescue horse, but certainly not my first horse in need of therapy. I had a great grade mare who had been beaten about her head with chains - she never trusted. This new mare who has not been physically abused but was nearly starved to death should be easier.

I do not know for sure, but I am pretty certain that I do not have a horse with to many issues, My horse just has had to many humans with issues....I think she has plans to finish me out by next spring...once she has filled all the holes in "my" foundation!! Hopefully at that time I will be broke to ride....and light enough to carry!

I love stories like this because they are much like my own. Don't you just swell up when you get something accomplished? even the simplest thing that makes your horse more confident in you and you in your ability. Once that happens it just seems like everything tends to come together. The next thing you know you and you horse are looking good going down the trail or around the ring and you think back to the beginning and just have a huge grin on your face....
