I am getting sick and tired of hearing the excuse "He/she is just old" as a reason for allowing a horse to look like a walking skeleton. We have the feeds and technology to prevent old age skinnyness. What apparently we do not have, is people willing to take the time to utilize them and instead, just kinda wait around for the "old horse" to starve to death after a lifetime of servitude.

And good gravies. Twenty is really not even that old anymore. There is no reason that mare could not STILL be teaching young children the wonder of horses had somebody taken the time and money to give her the attention she needs.

THANK YOU SO MUCH...for seeing the worth of the older horse. I think she will bounce back pretty well, so unless there is an underlying lameness issue you have not mentioned, don't sentence her to the pasture just yet. Some horses really enjoy human interaction and feeling useful. I know people who would pay big bucks for and take good care of, a pretty babysitter their children can ride around for fun.

Shoot, my girlfriends Morab was taking on Poker runs and 20 mile trail rides right up until he died at nealry 30 years old, of a rectal anneruism (sp)

Finally mother nature decided to hold off the rain so that I could get the chance to snap some pics. The neighbors told me how much better she is looking. She getting to be quite the stinker and knows when it is time for her meds and will play a game of bet you cant catch me!!! But there has to be one negative person in the bunch, one of the neighbors (a very new horse owner that now has 6 horses!) saw her laying in the sun and she was thinking about getting up but changed her mind and flopped back over and continued napping. She walks over to me and point blank said that I need to get the vet out (she had just been there the day before) cause that horse was sick and I was going to be in BIG trouble if her horses (she lives 2 miles down the road) get sick from what she has. I was like what you mean she is sick? She was did you see her flop over in the pasture that is not normal!! I was ok whatever, thinking to myself and the behavior that their horses have is normal (her one mini climbs up on your back and they think that is the cutest thing ever .... and they think that it is just adorable that their yearling rears up when you are leading her) Ok sorry mini vent there I feel better now
Anyway here are some more pics of Katie!!!!!!!!!!

WOW just look at her after just such a short time- she really is a lovely, beautiful mare. As for the neighbor, oh geez, well let it roll off your back.. you know she is healthy.. is she a vet? lol
You are inspiring me.. I'm going to be doing some rescue work soon (as soon as I can convince the BO of the horses' in question to let me help) and looking at what you are doing for this girl is giving me confidence that horses can come back if you give them a chance!

What a beautiful, sweet mare. She looks so happy grazing and getting fat Hope she continues to do well and produces a healthy foal after all the trauma she has been through
