Sweet peas are REALLY good too. What you could do is go to the Grocery store and buy the mixed veggies. Just put them in warm water or find out if she like um cold.
These are just suggestions, ignore me if you want...
I have heard of the Flax Seed but never thought about the Sweet Peas! I will have to try that

My friend (who was the one that pulled her from the place that she was at) was able to track down someone that knew the horse in her younger years. She was a children s show horse (packed around lots of beginner riders) in VA and on the way home from a show when she was about 6 the truck that was hauling her trailer was slammed into and it caused the trailer to flip and her eye was injured so bad that the vet removed it at the scene of the accident.

You would never know that she was ever in a trailer accident she loads like a dream!! And she is not spooky on the side that eye is missing at all, the only thing that i have to do is during feeding time if you are on her blind side i just bang her feed bucket with my hand so that she knows to follow me, although now she knows right where she gets feed and lately she will run on ahead and beet me to her stall!

I have to say that this horse is a complete angel!!! She had a rather large scab on her from an old wound (that we had all thought was already healed over). Well during her bath that scab came off and we where left with a nasty boo-boo !!! Vet came out the next day and of course it was too old to stitch so we just have to treat it. Well it is in about the most inconvenient place..and the PERFECT place for a horse that wanted to to KICK the living daylights out of me! She stands like a trooper and lets me wash it off and put meds on it the only thing that she will do is when the meds go on (i guess it might sting or just be uncomfortable) she will swish her tail fast and stomp her back legs! In fact my 14 year old daughter is perfectly comfortable treating her boo-boo (not that she likes it but mom makes her help take care of the horses )

I think it is so sad how people let these older horses get to that point, after all the shows, kids, and other things they did for people, it seems to me that we owe them something in return, not to just put them out back like an old rusty car!! Great that you took her in, I am sure in 6 months we wont even recognize her!

Good for you to take this mare in. I hope all goes well with the pregnancy. I look forward to watching her gain weight back. Any idea what she was bred to or if the owner bred her on purpose?

Amazing on so many levels.

First, you are amazing for taking her in and taking on the responsibility of not only her health and bringing her around but also the upcoming foal.

Second, amazing mare for having the fortitude to handle what life has thrown at her. From what you describe of her, she has taken it all with grace and beauty of spirit. I am sure when she gets a bloom on, she will show externally the beauty she has inside. (I'm getting misty writing this, as I can't imagine what she has been through).

Third, Amazing - but in a bad way - how horrible people can be to let an animal, under their care and responsibility, get to this point. There should be a spot in the afterlife for them to have first hand experience of the pain and suffering they have caused - over and over again. To me, that would be eternal justice.
