Arrow My palomino is getting black hair???

I was brushing Sunshine this morning and I noticed that she is getting alot of black hair in her mane and tail. Her mother is a buckskin. Do you think she will turn into a buckskin? Is this possible for a 4 yr. old? Her tail is getting so thick I can hardly pick it out and in the middle it is BLACK...I never noticed this before, I think it is new hair growth. She is beautiful anyway I was just wandering why she would be changing now.

In the summer when she sheds out she is very pale yellow (almost white).
Do you think her mane and tail will turn totally black? Just Curious

Hrm... its possible i guess, but im not good at this, i know they can change colors, like when sandy was 2 he was a sooty buckskin, now at 4.5 hes turning into a golden colored buckskin, each year he gets more golden. So there is a chance she could have a black mane and tail!!

I highly doubt that she will turn to a buckskin. Most often horses will change color after their foal coat, or I have heard of buckskin yearlings going gray after their yearling year. I am not really sure why she is getting black hairs, but I don't think it a 4 year old palomino can change into a buckskin.

The palomino and buckskin colorings are produced by two different gene combos...so she can't change from a palomino to a buckskin. However, she could have the genes for buckskin and just now be showing them, though she is pretty old for that to be happening. We had a foal we thought was palomino until she shed out her foal coat to show black legs and her mane and tail turned blacker.

Yep...Palomino is a red based horse with a creme gene. Buckskin is a black based horse with agouti and one creme gene. You could always have your horse tested by UC Davis.

She's probably a sooty palomino. Feed and nutrition can also play a BIG role in coat color. Your hay, pasture, or grain might be different than it was last year.

Many palominos will grow black hairs in their mane and tail. It is usually very few hairs though.

And just for the record - the hairs might LOOK black, but they aren't. Palominos (all red-based colors) do not have a gene for black, so black can't be part of the picture. Very dark brown or dark gray, perhaps.
