Thanks everyone! You all have been helpful, and got me calmed down. It just irritating for people to do that!! I feel for all of you that has went through the similiar thing I have. Tack is expensive, and I don't mind sharing, but don't take from me. I will ask nicely, and hopefully I will get them back, and never again, will I leave anything there!!

Very rude and uncalled for. People need to learn to buy their own tack and supplies - it's expensive enough without having it disappearing on you!!

I would never dream of taking things that didn't belong to me!! Never!!! I can't stand a theif!! All he had to do was ask, and I would've gladly let him use the boots. But, you never know someone. Thank goodness it wasn't my saddle!!! I'd be so much madder than I am right now!!! LOL

Sorry that happened to you...mabye you could just simply say...I can't find my tack...have you seen it because I thought I saw you with it the other day? That usually works. Good luck!

One of these days when I open my stables, I will have tack & feed rooms for each stall that owners can put a lock on themselves (it will be required) I have ran a stable in my younger days with 35 stalls. 25 of which were in the big barn indoors. I made sure every boarder had a lock on their tack & feed rooms. We didn't have any problems that way. Also some of the owners chose to put locks on their stalls. One horse there cost $1mil so I had keys as well in case of emergency. This was a guarded horse. I loved living and working there as well as the boarders were wonderful.

Sounds like a great idea!! I use to work at a 25 stall barn, actually I was the barn manager there, anyway, I only had 2 problems there of tack coming up missing from boarders. I found the culprits, one was a girl that worked the weekends, and she was taking a brush, girths, and breast collars, and a jacket. Well, I got everything back, and of course she was fired!!! And then we had a trainer there, that had coaxed the owner's wife into ordering alot of bits, and new blankets, cavaleties, and english pads. Well, when the trainer decided to quit with no notice, all that stuff came up missing!!! My boss and I tracked her down, and got almost everything back. I thought my boss should have pressed charges on her. But he didn't. He thought it was embarrassing enough that we showed up to get the stuff back. But I figured she'd just rip off another barn. So after all that, we put things in locked trunks, and for boarders that didn't have one, we gave them one to use. Plus we had locks on the tack room doors. I should've used a trunk where I was, but I've known this guy for alot of years, and never dreamed he would take something of mine!! We always borrowed this or that from each other, and had no problems till now. What I should do, is say to him, "boy my boots look great on your horse!" and see what he says.

I deal with this all the time, especially from a few people that are starting to ride english and don't have all the tack and equipment, so they "borrow" mine, don't return, or if they do, they don't clean it or take care of it.
So, I had my husband make me a tack trunk and then I found a truck tool box at a garage sale and I just started locking all of my stuff. I went through everything late one night and found all of my stuff. When they asked why was locking stuff up, I just said, "Well, a lot of my stiff kept dissapearing and not getting returned, so I just locked it up." That way, no one got accused or singled out, they just now have to ask me if they borrow something. Which, helps me to know who has my stuff.

Thats a good idea. Our barn has tack closets, and you are required to lock them.
The only things left out are the rugs the horse is wearing that day, a halter and lead rope and boots if the horse used them.
Nothing else.
There's only one feed room, but the staff does all the feeding and it's locked otherwise.

I've never had anything stolen.

I'd be wary of locking the stall doors, just in case of a fire or something. We have a donkey anyway- she alerts us if anyone is in the barn!

Tack closets sounds like a great idea!! We will be building a new barn next year. Although I won't have boarders. But, I live way out in the country, and there are alot of horse people around. And whatever measures I can take to protect our things is a must. You never know!! Double locking up things is a great idea!
