My horsey is inbred!?!

I'm lookin at Roady's papers, and Ebony Masterpiece shows up as his great-great grandfather and his great-grandfather...or something...Ebony Masterpiece is on his father's side (4th generation) and then on his dam's side (3rd generation), which makes Roady's mommy and daddy related or something. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S GOING ON BUT EBONY MASTERPIECE IS ON HERE TWICE! What does it meeean? I have confused myself so bad that I'm going to go fight with the scanner and see if I can show you this...

Yes, it seems like he must be inbred. How old is he? If he's full grown and isn't too sickly, than I wouldn't really worry about it.

Technically, No your horse is not inbred. Your horse is line bred. inbreeding is breeding extremely closely related animals such as father/daughter, mother/son, or full brother/sister. And technically Almost all horses in the entire world have lines in common on sire and dam side at some point in time be cause almost all breeds are 'created' breeds with a set number of foundation horses who were line or inbred to produce the breed.

Yup, what Top Dun said ^^^. It's quite common for horses (especially TBs, is he a TB?) to have a common ancestor on each side of the family. Don't worry about it, the genetic relationship at that level is minute.

This is very common in registered horses. The more popular/famous sires will be there a few times usually. Dodger has Three Bars three times in his, Sugars Bars twice, Native Dancer twice and Man O'war twice.

You have a line bred horse and that means that it has been purposefully bred for quality and type.

With line breeding you carefully select horses to double up on a pedigree.

So not bad - its good!

NO reason to panic.... Touch leads to Ofir 5 times on his papers and Gabby and Annie lead to MUscat 4 times. Just to name a few.

I agree with what everyone said. The only problem with line-breeding is when the sire carries a genetic defect that isn't noticeable right away. Ohhhhhh there was a sire that was this and I can't for the life of me remember. It began with a P...anywhoo. He carried a gene for a skin disease in which the skin would come off really easily, and it has just been traced back to him. It wasn't noticed except in inbred (or line bred) horses because the dam and sire's genes connected and the foal had the disease rather than carrying it.

But this is rare so I wouldn't worry too bad. :-) Unless there is something wrong with your horse then he'll be fine :-)

Okay, I feel better now. He's a nine-yr-old TWH, so I guess he'll be okay. I'd never heard of line breeding until today. You guys are so helpful.

I always thought inbred would be the same horse on boths sides anywhere on a 5 horse pedigree, but you learn something new every day, and I've been wrong before, lol. But I was talking about it with one of my friends, and she said it's not uncommon.
