Question My horse is laying down a lot

Should i worry if my horse has layed down twice now in one day? She usually only lays down when it's really sunny and warm out. Well today it was really cold and really windy. Could she be trying to keep warm? Could she be not feeling well? The dentist came today and had to pull her wolf teeth, could that be the prob? I'm just a little concerned is all. Thanks!

I wouldn't be overly concerned. Laying down twice in one day is not what I would call excessive. Generally, horses will only lay flat out when they feel totally relaxed and safe in their environment. Of course, a severely ill or lame horse will lay flat out and be unable to rise, but the chances are that your horse is enjoying a cat nap. If her mouth were really bothering her, I doubt she'd be lounging like a sun worshipper - she'd more than likely be standing up with a pained expression on her face.

Shoot, you should see mine. LAZY beast. He'll lay down ALL DAY if I let him. He's a sun worshipper!! I turned him out, and he rolled, got up, looked around, lay'd down, and slept for an HOUR!!!!! Rare do horses lay for that long flat...but when they feel 100% safe, they will lay longer.

Some rarely will ever be down. The key is to know your horse. I get colic calls once a week. He's not, but if someone new to the barn is there, they call cause he's sleeping away. Or when they enter his stall, he just opens his eye and then closes it after he sees that you aren't coming in to eat him. Wont move his head. You think he's dead sometimes.

If he was standing a LOT, I'd be worried. If my neighbor's horse was laying down as much as mine, I'd call her cause that isn't her horse's normal behavior.

its more than likely cos she got her teeth pulled. You'd feel like lying down too! Probab just feels out of sorts - was she doped for it?
Prob just tired. Don't worry, hope she feels better soon.

Nope not doped. I was just a little concerned because it was a nasty day to be lying down. It was cold, windy, and not sunny at all. So it just didn't make sense. But she seems ok now. Thanks everyone!
