My Great Skunk Ordeal

Well I went to my cousins graduation ceremony on Friday night and didn't get home till late so I got out to thge barn to clean and feed at about 10 pm. So I let the barn dog Mitzi off her chain so she could run around while I cleaned. Well the horses were outback so I went to bring them up front but there was a huge puddle in fornt of the gate so I opened the gate and figured that Stormy would come up and I could halter him. Well Bessy walked out, you don't have to halter her she just follows the others, an dthen Stormy comes barreling forward and knocks me to the side and takes off running. I slammed the gate shut before Dreamer did the same and ran after him. Mitzi is barking and chasing him as she is part Australian Shepherd and thinks she should herd the horses luckily Stormy runs right through the gate into the front pasture and into his stall to eat his dinner. Bessy is staring undecidedly because Dreamer is in the back and Stormy is in the front and so she stands in the mioddle. I then have to go get Dreamer, she comes running up stops in teh puddle and sprays water all over me, so now I am wet muddy and cold. I catch her and get them up fornt.

So I go about cleaning stalls and then I am over playikng with Dreamer (tug of war with a towel, shes a weird horse) and I notice the dog is gone. Well she comes running into the pasture snorting and rubbing her face on the ground whining. My first thought was oh no she got attacked by a porcupine. Now I don't even think we have porcupines around here so I am not sure why I thought that. So I walk up to her and bend down...and almost faint from the smell. AGH she got up close and personal with a skunk! By now its like midnight... so I grab her and wash her wiyth horse shampoo so now I smell like skunk. I manage to chain her up and go home... did I mention I had to go to my Cousin graduation partythe next day?

Yeah well I showered and I smelled ok except my hands. So we don't have tomatoe juice and I think well tomatoe juice comes from tomatoes right... so I am in teh kitchen rubbing a tomatoe all over my hands.... that doesn't work. So I try srubbing... then tomatoe sauce... then vinegar.. I finally give up. Next mnorning I read online that peroxide baking soda and sopa works. Well I try it and it sorta works. So after the party I head out to the barn armed with peroxide, baking soda, dog shampoo, baby wipes, toothpaste, mouthwash, and oxyclean. These were all things people online swore by to get rid of the amell. Well 10 baths later and after trying every one of those products... thge smell is mostly gone except when you styick your face in her face (she of course got sprayed right in teh face). So we will see how she smells when I go out today as I want to take her to our lake cottage lol.

I am pretty sure I fried her fur using all the stuff lol my favorite was when I was smearing toothpaste on her face and rinsing her with mint flavored Scope mouthwash mixed with dish detergent. Ugh she smelled like a minty skunk after that lol. Well I just thought I would share my story with everyonel. Luckily shes an outside dog

Ok, I know EXACTLY how you feel. Last saturday i posted "skunk in the barn" OMG isn't it the raunchiest smell in the world!! Our tack room still stinks!! My tack got sprayed!! By the way, if this happens to anybody else's tack, the pessoa gel soap works wonders. just don't dilute with water...lololol. I'm right there with ya. Oh and tomatoe juice doesn't work. The bleach, peroxide ,dish detergent, baking soda thing does though. It just takes a ton of applications to work. Good Luck!!!!

Oh I know all to well that amell we have tons and tons of skunks around here.My husbands aunt says that a powder you mix with water called Oder Mute works really good. She says that it totaly kills the smell.I havent tried it yet.My dog has not went after a skunk since. It works for all kinds of oders she says.Like urin and all.I found the Oder MUte in my local Co Op.You might be able to find it in most feed stores and farm supplys.
