MY Filly Choked!!

OK yesterday was very scary! I was going to ride my filly, I usually put a scoop of grain in the round pen.. so shell go in there, then I can catch her easily. Well I was out of grain, so I used a little beet pulp. I ALWAYS SAOK IT but I don't know how many times on here I've been told you dont need to... so I listened to the NON-SOAKERS and just gave her a handful DRY so I could catch her. (note* it was a very samll amount) Any how.. I took my stuff out to ride and I noticed she was making wierd noises in her throat.. and CHOAKING!! I immediatly tried to get her to drink but she wasn't interested.... so I massaged her throat.. which helped! I could feel a little lump in there and as I rubbed it it broke loose and she was able to swollow it! SO I LEARNED MY LESSON..... I got very lucky, And If I wasn't right there it could have been really bad. So for now on I think I'll be more careful about lisitning to people. And I can say first hand... SOAK THE STUFF....

I am glad everything was ok, you may want to keep a close eye on her. When my mare choked, I was advised to feed her soft food for a while since her throat would be sore and may not want to eat, but my choke was a bit worse since I had to have the vet remove it so it was in there longer.

Wow, good catch. Agree with Moostang, soften her feed for a few days.

Just curious, beet pulp pellets or shreds?

Well you definatley settled the soaking beet pulp debate.

Just out of curiosity, has your horse ever eatened any type of pelleted food? Some horses are just more choke prone than others (because of eating habits/throat) and any type of pellet will cause them to choke, not just beet pulp. My mare has choke on normal feed pellets (1st time) which makes her more prone to choking now (has choked 2x since on different things)

LOL. I wouldnt say its settled that debate. I feed shreds dry, but they are mixed in with the pellets. LOL. But, like I always say, it depends on the horse, some are just chokers (like you brought up) and/or maybe I am just getting lucky so far. Mine dont seem to like it soaked??

At a barn we boarded at we had an older guelding that used to gorf his food down and often ended up choaking. Reasently I heard of a solution that might help. Putting a couple smooth stones in the feed pale with the feed so they have to work around them to get the feed.
