my dog hurt her eye... what can I do?

I have three dogs, two of which are fairly young and last night decided to go on an all night rampage, God knows where. After two hours, we finally gave up looking for them, assuming they'd come home. They did, at about midnight, when I was asleep - my dad brought them in.

This morning, I let them out and went to class, came back a couple hours later and went to go check on them; and Katie was sprawled out on the ground, not responding to my calling her. She finally got up and walked over (she usually bounds up and down and runs in circles, really goofy dog) and I noticed her right eye was swollen halfway shut and there was a little mucus build up.

There's no other injuries, so I brought her up, put a cold washcloth on it for a few minutes and let her into the garage to rest in the dark. What else should I do?

I would at least call the vet and describe what the problem is and see what he/she recomends. I hope she gets better soon.

a quick look in the eye by the vet to be sure there is no corneal injury might be a good idea.

I can't tell you any meds, as there are 2 meds, one, if there is an ulcer, can do more damage than good.

    Thanks guys,

I will try and persuade my dad to get her to the vet when I see him today- I don't think he saw it last night, it was too dark.

    Pooooor Katie.

Been through this with two horses--- very bad and painful. Really should get a vet's opinion. A corneal injury can be very painful and if left untreated can cause blindness. Early detection and treatment with corrects meds is a must. Good luck.

Our dogs name is JD..he is part Rat Terrier & Chihuahua..he weighs about4 Lbs..he also took off on a journey to find a dog in heat and he came home the first night no problems. Well he did it again and was gone for over 30 hours, I finally found him on the road next to us. We brought him home only to find that his left eye is in HORRIBLE condition...it is also running the green and yellow puss looking stuff and his eye lid is severely swollen. I have ERYTHROMYCIN OPTH OINTMENT...BUT it is for humans. My question is..."IS IT SAFE TO PUT ON MY DOGS EYE"?

Probably not. Its infected and needs vet care or he may lose it... Also maybe neutering him?

OP Vet ASAP. My dog got into a fight with my cat and the cat won. Dog had to have antibiotics and eyedrops and she still bears the marks
