I would say it would be easier to find an Arab for that over there than a Mustang.

I agree...look at the winners of the major endurance races..you will see that Arabians will and hold most, if not all of the titles, and dominate the winning places in the sport of Endurance.

Folks in England may possibly have an easier time finding an Arabian over a Mustang for endurance but, I'll match my little chestnut Mustang mare against any Arab on any continent and she'll do herself very proud. There's a reason Mustangs manage to survive the wild. I know a whole barn full of beautiful Arabians-----and a vet making a fortune on treating all their problems with their legs, their allergies, etc. etc. Comet's biggest problem? Keeping too much weight from accumulating because she's such an easy keeper. Too bad you Limeys don't have any Mustangs in your country---they're 100% USA born and bred.

| Senior Member+ | The majority of Endurance races have been won by Arabs and Arab crosses but there have been a few huge ones also won by Mustangs in the past 5 yrs... The reason you see Arabs more then Mustangs in the ribbons is simple... Arabs are the predominante breed and breed cross used by serious Enduro racers... Mustangs are fewer and farther between. I'm a HUGE Arab lover but now that I have a Mustang, I would match Poncho up against any top conditioned Arab over the desert any day. There are wild horses and semi-feral horses in the UK and other parts of Europe, but I don't know how common it is to find them as riding mounts. I'd say a good Arab or Arab cross will be easier to find.

Not to long ago, Appaloosas, (the true foundation bred appaloosa) were near the top of the competitive lists in endurance riding as well. For endurance riding ANY horse breed can do it, but to be comeptitive, you need to look for the following things in a horse. 1. Soundness and good bone density. 2. Pick a thiner( Narrower bodied) horse over a think muscular one. (IE A TB over a Draft Cross) An Arab over a QH, a Foundation appaloosa over a Cob type. Etc. 3. The WILLINGNESS of the horse. If you just want to get into the sport for fun, i see nothing wrong with trying your own horse for a while to see how he goes. Just becasue he was "bred" for a different sport does not mean he can't do endurance. Besices as a newcommer to the sport, you really ought to get in a few 'test' rides to see how much you would really like it.
