Unhappy Mud Fever: to curry off or what?

My pony *Duncan* has mud fever on his backlegs. My friend told me to curry it off and then let the hair grow back? this seems painful but it works for her horse(she said). is this a good idea? im looking for a way not to have to spend much money.

Volt, my old horse, got mud fever pretty bad, on ALL legs. We used diaper rash cream on it. It worked pretty well. I know its hard, but try to keep in on and around the infected area 24-7. And try to keep your horse away frokmk puddles, ect. that will wash it off. Best of luck!

And for currying, I know quite a few people who will pick at thier horses rain rot, mud fever, ect. and it works but it just sounds painful so I personally wouldn't do it because there are other ways that work, just not as fast. I guess its just personal prefernce.

Rain rot, as we call it here in FL, is an an-aerobic fungus. Meaning that it thrives in a moist area where there is no air. Once you start currying it, and opening it up to let the air get in, it will go away pretty quick. You can also use an antifungal ointment. I like to just curry, wash with a betadine shampoo and then towel dry.
