| Senior Member+ | Moving between states?
My mom's co-worker's daughter was told by their vet in TX that if they brought their horses to WI, the horses may become sick (weather change). I wouldn't think this would be a problem. Unless the vet is thinking they would get stressed out by the changing weather/surroundings. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

It really depends on the season. I moved my horses from Cali to Wyoming in November and nobody got sick, they just coated up really fast. Granted if you move them from extreme heat to extreme cold you may have some problems. Or a nice warm barn to an outside pasture blizzard. Just use common sense and plan your move so the weather is somewhat even.

I moved my horse from Washington State to Florida during the summer of 2000...where she was in WA was rainy and about 60-70 degrees (sunny on a good day)...FL was sunny always and 90+ degrees and SUPER humid... She never had a problem...I made sure to keep a fan going for her and keep her out at night until she got acclimated... I'm sure moving a horse from heat to cooler weather is a LOT different...but using common sense is your best bet on this

| Senior Member+ | Any time horses are moved, there is a potential that they can 'get sick' but compared to the number of horses being moved around the country daily it's very small percentage that have problems. (Unless you move to or go through a quarantined area.) Personally I've moved horses from NE FL to NW WA, from NW WA to the Mojave Desert and then back to WA 3 years later, and from NW WA to SD (Black Hills), and never had any health issues with the moves. I have been luck enough to have made these moves basically in spring or fall so that the temp./weather extremes were not that bad. |

My trainer takes her horses down to FL in the middle of January. Going from the single digits to warm weather her horses have never had a problem. She would just clip them before hand and keep a blanket on them. I think with common sense the horse should be fine!!! |

Ive heard of horses moving form Deep South to Nevada/ Montana in winter. I would think the horses would not be totally prepared for the temp difference and the best you could do is have some sheeting/ blanketing available til they have some time and chance to readjust.

My boy went from New Mexico to Vermont in May of 2007. He got sick on the way and then he ended up with rain rot something awful because all's it did was rain last yr [and this year] and he wasn't used to so much rain. He still has skin issues, he's in PA now with me and last winter he lost so much of his hair because of a bacterial skin infection. I was told it takes at least a year for them to get accustomed to the climate change. Next month he'll be with me a yr. I hope that he'll finally be OK. He has little spots all over him, I assume are fungus spots. Betadine doesn't seem to do much for him. He's on a skin suppliment but that doesn't seem to do much so I'm stopping that when what I have runs out and I just hope he'll be OK. |
