    mounting bareback

Not sure if this should go here or else where. How in the world do you mount a horse bareback when she is tall and you are short? My mare is 15.1 hh and I'm only 5ft.

well if you have a wooden fence or a gate, bring her along side that, climb up as far as u need to and jump on her, thats what i do with my horse it works great, or get a buckt and stand on then get up on her...goodluck lol

Oh man... I mount Diamond from the ground all the time. That meaning she is 15.2 and I am 5'7 But usually I try it on a hill, or fence.. Pinic tables, chairs, tree stumps. But lately I just jump on like an Indian would

Well, if you can't get on from a fence for some reason, you could do a swing on...

    1. Stand just infront of the horses shoulders, facing there butt
    2. Grab onto mane
    3. Take three big steps and push off, using your momentum to get onto the horse

get a mounting block. But honestly once you've got the hang of it vaulting on bareback is really easy and it doesnt matter how tall the horse is. I'm only 5ft 4 (maybe 5) and I can swing up to my sister's 17hh mare easily enough.

When I was younger I would swing up (Rob still does this) now I use whatever will give me about 6 inches, or I swing up most of the way and Rob will push my bum the rest of way up I get my leg up and over so I could hang up.. just not enough to pull myself the rest of the way.

once you get up bareback once by yourself.. youve got it. im 5'9 and one of my horses is 17hh and i get up on him just fine! once you get the hang of the old jump up then you will be fine. if you have a sturdy horse then you can place your hands one on his withers and the next on his lower back and hop 3 times and sort of pull your self up. the swing is the best way to do it.
There are times when you can trust a horse, times when you can't and times when you have to.

I used to jump onto my 16.3hh mare and I'm about 5'8". You just need springs in your feet and a horse that doesn't spook so you can flap your legs like a mermaid until you're high enough to get one over the back.

When I used to ride race horses I used to jump onto them with a saddle (easier than getting your feet in the stirrups and faster than a leg-up!) but now I can't jump onto anything to save my life. Practise makes perfect!

Just reading the title of the thread cracked me up. I remember practicing getting on bareback. Some horses are great and will just stand there (and silently laugh) while you practice looking like a moron, kick them on the way up, grunt and pant and pull yourself up...others I swear have a knack for HELPING you look like a moron. Lead up nicely to the fence, wait for you to climb up a few rungs and then take two steps straight out so you have to decided if you can jump that far, if your leg will stretch that far, if you'd slide over the other side of the horse when you jump, or if you should climb down and lead the horse in a circle and try again

I had a friend in high school who did the indian over the rump mount...it was great fun to watch him but I think I wont ever try I just know the horse will move forward as soon as I leap and end up on the ground He had the coolest horse, Bandit, morgan.
