Stormy, it's not that something is going on now, it's just coming out in the open a bit more. It's nothing new, and the RCMP will tell you that, in fact, they even said it on the news last night. It's horrible. Hay prices are good, and there is plenty available. There is no reason why these horses shouldn't have been fed, and no excuse for it. The problem will always exist, as the people who do this will always exist.
I know......there are ignorant and selfish people all over the globe.

Is there anything I can do to help?

I'm not sure, but I believe they are taking donations. Other than that, you could probably contact the rescue to see what else you can do.

www.bearvalleyab.org

The news video I posted also has different contact information as well.

In my opinion it has made this worse since you can't slaughter hay prices have gone thru the roof making it harder and harder for people to afford there Horses.
Higher hay prices are in large part due to the increase in Horses that now have to be feed.
I have one horse right now but soon there should be 3 and I know hay in my area has almost trippled and is much harder to come by.

Well, you better look again. There isn't an increase in horses with all the excess going over the borders to Canada and Mexico.

Geesh! Everybody wants to blame everything on the closing of the slaughterhouses. Next, we'll be hearing that's why people are paying such high fuel prices.

I can't believe anyone would blame the high hay prices on the slaughterhouses closing! I've heard it all now!

Well let's see I have owned Horses since 1987 in this country.
I have never had to pay higher prices since the non slaughter people got there way.
I believe slaughter has it's place when done in a humane way.
Not to torture animals.
I mean we slaughter cows every day and that's ok for most people.
But all those Horses that would have gone to slaughter now have to be feed you really think that dosen't have an impact that you are more naive than I thought.

Okay guys, lets keep in mind, the horses in this thread are in Alberta... we have slaughter here, and hay prices are good... I got big round bales for $30/bale this year. There is NO excuse for this.

Update on the Horses in Alberta...

The horses have been relocated to Ardrossan, Alberta, East of Edmonton. There are 97 left, 2 died and 1 had to be put down before they reached their new home. The horses are at Keno Hills Stable.

If you need more information send me private message and I can forward to you phone numbers, the website and press release. They are taking donations as well...

It is very sad

out.west.girl, these are different horses we're talking about. You're referring to the 100 arabians that were rescued earlier this month. We're talking about the six horses rescued from Rocky Mountain House area on Sunday, March 16.

Well, let's see.....the winter BEFORE the last plant was shut down, I was paying $75-$85 for a round bale. The year before that, $25 for a round bale. This winter, I paid $45 for a round bale. So, if I wanted to connect the closing of the plants with the price of hay, for me and those all around me, it made OUR hay prices go DOWN!

This thread is suppose to be about the rescued horses, NOT the price of hay and the closing of the slaughter houses. I think a new thread addressing those things would be appropriate if you want to discuss it.

To the OP, I'm sorry for taking this off topic, and will from here on stick to the topic. I just had to address what was said.

I'm glad those horses were rescued. Was it the one that wouldn't stand because it was so weak, that they put down?

I don't think that there are more or less horses being neglected in Canada. However with colder winters neglect will cause animals to suffer much quicker.
