I just get warm murphy's oil and a sponge and clean as normal (you may want to first wipe the mould down depending on the amount). I have done that a few times......usually it dosent harm the tack, expeically if you get at it right away!

Living in the land of mold...lol...Florida... I have always just used any brand of Leather cleaner...and had it wipe right off. In the summer humidity....I run the window A/C unit in my tackroom or my tack turns white/green in a week. I am sure it will be good as new with just a few swipes.

Once leather molds, it will always be there. It lives in the leather, not on the outside (kind of like a moldy block of cheese or loaf of bread). You can continue to wipe it off the outside, but it will keep coming back. There is one thing that I have successfully used to rid leather of mold. It's an air purifier that is capable of killing mold (is used in black mold houses). Of course, it costs $1200. But if you have a lot of expensive show tack... |

I agree, wipe it down with a damp cloth, to get the "spores" off of it, then start cleaning away! I have also soaked nasty leather in hot water and Murphy's oil then wiped it off after it soaked and then after it dried, I followd up with a good leather conditioner. KEEP in mind if it is light stuff, conditioner and soaking will darken the leather! It happens to ALL of us.. btw! |

My tack gets moldy too... I hate it. I wipe it off first some before I go to clean it... I use baby wipes. Makes it easier to clean when I do. Stuff gets really moldy around here too. Sometimes in just 4 or 5 days! Grrr. Lol.

We just refinished a extremely moldy circle-y saddle a customer brought in to our store to have us look at. We used Leather Therapy wash first to get all of the mold and mud off of the leather and then after a day (to let the leather dry) we applied Leather Therapy Conditioner two coats (which helps to resist mold from forming on the leather). I now wish I had a before and after pic to show everyone, oh well maybe next time.
