SadDad, it's an easy mistake to make, as I said above, I did the very same thing and recently sold that horse to look for a better match for myself. I think she will be much happier on a horse that's "been there, done that" and who can teach her many things about riding while remaining safe. Good luck in your new horse search.

SadDad, I agree , don't feel bad , it IS and easy mistake to make and yes your daughter and this filly can grow together but you will need to get her another lesson horse until she is more experienced and the young filly can be beter trained..... that is an option. Otherwise , an older more experienced horse si your answer. Good luck and keep us informed. |

Even though my first horse to ride was a 3 year old (and I was 6). I have to agree with the others. It is just not a good combination. My horse was fine with me, and never thought of doing anything wrong, but I was lucky with that. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else though!

I agree with everyone else. It would probably be a good idea to find a different older horse that knows the ropes for your daughter to enjoy, rather than risking your daughter's saftey or making her afriad of horses if something were to happen.

a 3 yr old horse is green (not have been ridden for long, AT ALL) and an inexpirienced rider (is also grren) green and green DO NOT go together inthe horse world!!! I myself have ridden since i was 5, before that was on ponyrides, and on friends horses being led around. I am now almost 15 and I have a 21 yr..just because theyre older DONT mean they cant be fun, or cant move,...my mare is 21 going on 7..def not a kids horse, but I am expirienced enough to handle her....my friend who is 12 rides a 27 yr old..he is so kid safe, and they have the best time together! I suggest that you get your daughter an older horse, who is kid safe.

o and i forgot to mention, oklder horses will actually help you to learn! most are teachers themselves! my mar would never hurt a soul..she knows the ropes, and I learn so much from her. they will teach. I went back and read the entire posts..dont feel bad. MANY ppl make that mistake! I definently suggest selling, or giving back the horse and finding something older. take a very expirienced person with you to try the horse out, like your trainer (instructor) who can assess the horse's personality, health, and all around horse self. Geldings (a castrated male horse) actually do make the best first horses, as they do not have the moodiness of mares (mares can be moody when in heat, and alot of mares atre just generaly like that sometimes..) Your daughter is very lucky to ahve such a caring Father!

SadDad, you seem like a really good dad! I hope you find a great horse for you daughter, I'm sure you will! Trade the young horse in for a good solid trained older horse and your daughter will learn lots from the horse and have lots of fun! GOOD LUCK |
