Miss Bandit!!!!!!! Sue B!!!! NEED FOUNDER HELP

UGH....ok, Scooter will drive me to drink. I swear.

he gets about 20 lbs of Bermuda a day the past 2 weeks a day. I'll get you the starch/fiber numbers in just a bit. I got to run...... SAME batch of hay for 2 weeks. Vet told me hold off before adding anything else to see where he would go after the move as a precaution. Sure enough, he's set back into another attack. Vet pulled blood, I paid for the IR test a few days ago when I noticed he MIGHT be having issues, but wasn't sure.....yesterday, sure enough WHAM. Vet drew more blood. he called this morning, not IR. waiting on a few other tests to come back. But the amounts should NOT have set him back. Vet is looking to make sure he didnt injest anything poisonous as a precaution.....looking at many different things.....

I know the stress of moving might have set him off.....but now my vet told me only 10 lbs of Bermuda today until we can locate the reason. Which bothers me as he is so BIG, that is not even 1% of his BW.

NOW what do I feed him? My nutritionist won't be in for a few more hours....and even at that, I can't do anything "feed" related anyways.

You basically need to "start" him over. I would also take him back to that amount of hay for now. Are you soaking to reduce carbs as far as possible? I would do that for at least a few days also. Just gradually increase him back to where you want him.

I would also get him some magnesium asap. MagOx or human supps will do. Start him at 3 tbs/day (MagOx) for a month (that would be 15g of pure magnesium (human supps are generlly not pure either). This should start to get his celluar functions back in order.

IR is not always easy to identify. The current tests are sometimes false. Comparision of insulin to glucose (drawn at that same time) is a better identifier of IR. I'm running late right now...I'll get you the ratio later tonight. This ratio tells you if the amount of insulin being pumped out is correct for the amount of glucose...when those are in order, then IR is not a factor as the body is dealing with the amounts of glucose. Hope all this is making some sense.

He probably won't eat the Mg without something else...a nandfull of feed/beet pulp should do it. Also, introduce the Mg slowly or he may refuse it.

Some of the metabolic cases that I have delt with simply take months or even years to get them under control...even with the strictist of dietary controls. Once the ball is rolling....it is hard to stop it in some of the more severe cases....sometimes, it can never be stopped.

This is the second IR test from what I found out. he was negative both times. He was negative for all the Cushings tests as well, though my vet wants to run it again. He's running a detailed blood panel and waiting for results. Hopefully we'll here something before the end of the day.

He's back to being "OK" this morning, without medication. I've got him locked up to reduce movement right now and haven't fed him anything. Going to go give him half a flake here in a bit after it is done soaking.......wasn't soaking before. Will definitly be from now on though. Just picked up a large bucket with a drain so I can soak larger amounts than the small feed bucket.

Owner is beside himself. he's back out of town, and has NO idea what else to do. Not ready to give up on him, looking at him just a few minutes ago, I wouldn't give up on him just yet. FINALLY got permission to X-ray. So vet, when he gets a chance, will drop by and get x-rays. I'd trailer him up, but he doesn't fit in my 2 horse and I can't remove the divider.....kind of perminant.

Scooter, the paint i have in my care, decided to have a bout of laminitis on me.

Vet called me back...said he doubts the meds set it off, since I had thought he might have been off the day before, but he said it probably didn't help either. I called the owner....he's been dosed with Ivermectin and Praziquantal before, Last time was in February. (wow, and here I thought he hadn't been dewormed in forever)

Scooter is a horse that bw has in for training and a slim down program. He's foundered in all four feet in the past and is very overweight. Something has sent him into another laminitis attack.

How sure are you that that deworming in Feb didn't set him off too?

how sure am I? About 75% sure. The first time the owner ever noticed anything wrong with him was in April. The vet said, looking at the debri coming off the hoof wall, could have been....and the angle the hoof is growing now compared to what it was growing (the old angle).

Vet wants to do x-rays, but can almost guarantee rotation, significantly in the recent past...since if you look at the cornet band, it's growing at a straighter down angle than the older hoof is sitting at. And I am POSITIVe it was in april he was setting back last. Which the owner said was his first time ever. At that time, I didnt' see any problems in any of his hoof growth.....but I could be wrong.
