Mini standing on toes

Just a question, but what could cause a mini to stand on his hind toes? Its a case at the clinic I work at and it has use confused.

Nope I have seen him and he doesnt knuckle over at all. It looks like a ballerina up on her toes. He doesnt do it as he is walking just when he is standing.

I was thinking a stifle issue. It doesnt look like contracted tendons as he walks fine.

My mini that had a locking stifle would more or less drag her back legs not really walk on her toes but I still would not rule it out. Please let us know when you do find out what the problem is. I still have mini's and am always curious about problems they can have. Best of luck figuring it out.

Did this just come on suddenly or is it something the horse has always done ?
How old is this mini ?

Im not sure if she will go somewhere else. The vet I work for isnt really large animal, so she needs to go somewhere else and have it looked at. I will let you know what it is when I find out.

He is 2-3 yrs old, im not very sure. he was castrated about a year ago and ever since then he has done this.

"the term "contracted tendons" is a misnomer. Unfortunately it has become part of the lexicon of far too many including some vets, owners, farriers, and trimmers.

Regardless, is the pony urinating and defecating normally? Has he had his abdomen checked for normalcy? Why has it taken a year before professional help was sought?

Can you take some photos and post them?

Rick B-
He is urinating and defecating normally. He has had his abdomen checked. Not sure why it has taken a year, the owner didnt really think much of it until later. She had asked her farrier about it and she reccomended a vet to be notified.

I cant take any pictures as I have only seen the pony once and that was when I was with our vet on a out-call. It was just recently brought up again and that is why I was asking.
