My mom was telling me the other day that.. in some state.. I don't remember.. but she was saying that they are requiring that you get a micro-chip in your horse.. and when you go on a trail ride or take your horse away from your farm or anything you have to notify them first. I think it's BS.. I don't think I should ever have to tell someone when I want to ride my horse on the trail or anything like that. If I want to take a horse somewhere that's my bizz... Not anyone elses. I don't know.. I know that the chip would be good incase your horse got out and went somewhere.. then you could find it.. but I don't see that having to basically ask permission to go riding is a good thing.. what do you think? |

You're right, it's total BS. If they try to force it in my state, Lightning and I may just have to run away. LOL. No, it isn't fair and it isn't right. Not just that you'd have to ask permission, but if they government fell apart into a revolution or something and you had to escape on horseback...they'd be able to track you. I'm such an idiot. lol

nobody should be forced by law to microchip their horses let alone tell them when they are going out for a ride. I think microchiping is totally up to the owner. who could let authoritys know if their horse is missing. but to always tell someone when you are taking your horse out is going a bit too far |

Interesting. I found this on the 'net... Microchip ID in Horses 9/24/04 Microchips have been used for years in dogs and cats for identification purposes. These microchips have also been used in horses, although not to a great extent. Microchips are tiny devices that have a barcode identity tag and can be read with a special reader. The microchips are implanted in the horse’s neck ligament about a third of the way down the neck from the head. They are supposed to be compatible with living tissue and not cause a reaction, although we have experienced one such reaction and the chip had to be removed. There are two companies that manufacture the equine chips at this time. Unfortunately, the problem in the past has been that different readers are required for different chips. This problem has supposedly been solved as a universal reader has been developed, although these universal readers or scanners are not very common. It is believed that by 2006, all livestock, including horses, will have to be permanently identified. The USDA developed an animal identification plan in 2002 because of the concern with tracing animals and contagious diseases such as foot and mouth disease and mad cow disease. Other methods of a permanent IDs are lip tattoos and branding. If microchips are chosen for the method of identification, the USDA should chose one type and require it to avoid confusion with the scanners, as this information will be required on all equine coggins tests. Louisiana passed a law about 10 years ago requiring permanent ID in horses using either a microchip, brand, or lip tattoo. Since most horses get their ID when they are young, lip tattoos and branding are not common; most horses in Louisiana are microchipped. If you have a question about microchipping your horse, contact your veterinarian. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Con...222&A=1908&S=0 |

I think if it becomes mandatory, alot of horses will not get veterinary care because the way I understood it, if it passes and your horse isn't chipped- the vet is required to turn you in. It just wouldn't be good. |

As far as I am concerned the creators of this program and it's govermental supporters have only one agenda and that is to tax and control us, not to help us. I have recently heard about some of the different state government's already sending out informational packets saying that the NAIS is for our protection they want us to identify and catalogue every animal on your farm...as well as description-breed-sex AND uses. I have been told that the packet is about four pages of intrusive and tax related questions. It also says that we are in danger of mad cow disease and avian bird flu pandemic and this identification system will prevent an out break. I will never microchip especially after having read the NAIS guidelines about movement and tracking. In my opinion it is infringing on our private rights to move our horses as we see fit without government interference and approval. You need to read all about it and educate yourself and come to your own conclusions. And here is the government site that tells about it: USDA National Animal Identification System I can provide you with links to some sites that are against the program....there are LOTS more: STOP NAIS NO NAIS.org
