JB what else is on your bookshelf? I have only a few titles and would love to discover more.

I really liked the Von Zeigner book "The Elements of Dressage" - which surprisingly, isn't really about dressage IMO. He goes over his system of the Training Tree.

You recommended a book to someone on their thread.... well I bought it, read it, and loved it. It was the Paul Cronin book. Though not directly to me, thanks for the great recommendation! I'm currently going back through because there is so much to digest.

I have tried to join that board 3 times and I don't know why I never get an email! I shower (LOL!) Anyway, I would even go to the Charlotte area (actually live in Maiden). Not sure where you are - I have relatives in Kernersville, so I would also commute to the Winston-Salem area.

On another note, maybe I can pick your brain on another topic. My "baby" Bella is a 6 year old maiden mare. Her heat cycles are off the charts to the point where it appears she is in pain from straining. I have had one vet tell me that he can give her a shot, but he got a little shakey about the shot when I told him that I may want to breed her at some point (no money for that at this point). I have also talked to another vet about marbling but he said that they fall out - do you have any recommendations?

    Thanks for your help!!

It's me again with another request for your knowledge.

Right now I'm working at a Saddlebred barn giving lessons. It is kind of a "sticky" situation. The dad (70's) owns the barn, however his wife and daughter "run the show."

I have grown the lesson program from 2 to 10 in just one month. I teach balanced riding; previously the lessons consisted of 30 minutes of getting on one of their horses, going up and down the hallway and the riders being yelled at - "toes up, heels down", "sit up", blah, blah - no grooming, saddling, horsemanship, balanced, centered seat riding at all. I also have problems with the barn being run down, the round ring is placed in the center of the arena and flies and snakes run rampant. Yuck!

What I am considering is trying to find a barn that needs a barn manager/trainer/teacher. I do have my own horse, and I live in the Statesville area.

Can you give me any leads and advice?

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

Have you had a chance to think about what I can do to help the dressage saddle work for Meteor?

Good, you found the difference between higher safe *single* doses, and the 5-day double doses

Moxidectin and 5 days of dd'ing fenbendazole are the ONLY treatments for encysted strongyles.

Okay, I found the label information, and although Panacur Paste 10% has been tested safe for pregnant mares using higher dosages than the Panacur PowerPac does, the five-day aspect has not been evaluated for safety in pregnant mares.

I don't think I want my mare to be the guinea pig, even though I've heard of several people who routinely PowerPac their mares late in gestation.

Bother. I really don't want to have to use Quest. We're targeting strongyles-- are there any other options that get rid of all stages, including encysted?

    Thank you for the link!

Are you sure about the Powerpac not being evaluated for safety in pregnant mares? Because on most, if not all, websites I've seen it on, it does state that it is safe to use for mares in any stage of pregnancy.

Here it states the safety under 'Additional PowerPac Information'. http://www.horse.com/Panacur-Powerpack-BBL18.html

It does only say Panacur Paste 10%, though, not the actual PowerPac. It also gives the highest dose that was tested-- 11.4mg per lb. I don't know if that's as high a dosage as the PowerPac would give or not.

Do you happen to know where I can find any studies done on gut inflammation/damage done by using a Panacur Powerpac? I know Ryle has mentioned studies done on the topic, but I hate to bug her while her brother-in-law is so ill.

My vet wants to me to do a Powerpac on my mare, and I'd like to make an informed decision about it before I just do it. I know you have used them before, and I figured you may have read some of the studies and could point them out to me.

    Thanks!

Well, it's been an interesting few weeks. I learned that as I started asking for a little bit "more", Miss Nip started to make it clear that there were some issues that need to be addressed, both mentally and physically. It would take way too long to explain what her physical issues are, but they are pretty darn interesting to say the least. I'm going to be doing a few weeks of hands-on therapy with her to work through some of these issues, and then start over.

The good...

It's been a long while since I posted an update, and I feel very special that several folks have asked for one

As expected, we've had good days, great days, and really bad days. When I've hit a stumbling block I spend the next day or two doing groundwork where I can more effectively address the problem (like not moving off my right leg). The next ride is always SO much improved! I'm sure a better rider could address things just as effectively through a ride, but that's why they...

Continuing the work in the field, we headed out there this morning. Things actually started off better than yesterday - more relaxed. Had some really nice walking - it's amazing what you start to take for granted on a trained pony

Once again we worked through "one leg means move over, not go" *sigh* Fortunately this was a day where she got it quickly.

But this time, trotting was not really part of Catnip's game plan. I thought "we'll do a...

Miss Nip needs to continue to learn to work in the pasture. So, back out there this morning. It's like starting all over Trotting is sporadic, lots of head tossing, stop start. It was a bit frustrating, but given how relatively quickly she's progressed in the ring, I think if I concentrate on the field for a while, things will get to where they are in the ring.

One thing's for darn sure though, I'm waiting until the ring gets fenced in before I even think about cantering!...
