Hey thanks for the tip about the rope halter I should have thought of that! She's much better with it.

    LOL, my own personal stalker

Yes, it's possible for every horse to collect. BUT, what they look like isn't going to be the same. The horse whose neck comes flat out of his withers isn't ever going to have the same finished posture as a GP Dressage horse because, as you said, their neck/shoulder conformation is quite different. Likewise, a good GP Dressage horse is very unlikely to be a good reiner because of conformational differences, including the neck set.

But physical issues aside (ie injury), every horse can lift his withers, lift the base of his neck, engage the top neck muscles, flex at the poll, and, combined with some lifting of the back and engagement of the hindquarters, be collected and on the bit. Age, training, injuries, conformational build, etc, will affect what it looks like.

    Glad your brain is turning

Ah-hah, you're on! I've been stalking you, waiting for you to get on!

So I've been reading on Sustainabledressage.com, and my little brain started working overtime, and I got curious.

I was reading the pages on collection, particularly the one on false collection, and I started wondering if true collection (with the base of the neck lifted, poll at the highest point, nose on the vertical) is possible for every horse. In every picture on that website showing horses truly collected, their necks are coming up very high out of their withers. But what about a reining bred QH? They breed 'em so that the neck comes out flat from the withers. It's physically difficult for these horses to put their heads/necks up high for more than a few minutes. Obviously, they could lift the base of their neck, and be collected perhaps in a long and low frame, but is it possible for a horse with a naturally lowset neck to have the poll at the highest point, nose on vertical, AND be collected?

Just wondering, and I hope I've put it clearly enough that you can answer my question!

Yeah that's on my list of things to do when I get back to Delaware again in January. Need to start working with her and standing square. Time to start practicing with her for the Keuring in September.

You guys are evil. Making me look at all those beautiful studs. Makes me rethink who I want to breed Romi to. Haha. Do you think Letter of Marque would be a good cross with Romi?

Well, it's been an interesting few weeks. I learned that as I started asking for a little bit "more", Miss Nip started to make it clear that there were some issues that need to be addressed, both mentally and physically. It would take way too long to explain what her physical issues are, but they are pretty darn interesting to say the least. I'm going to be doing a few weeks of hands-on therapy with her to work through some of these issues, and then start over.

The good...

It's been a long while since I posted an update, and I feel very special that several folks have asked for one

As expected, we've had good days, great days, and really bad days. When I've hit a stumbling block I spend the next day or two doing groundwork where I can more effectively address the problem (like not moving off my right leg). The next ride is always SO much improved! I'm sure a better rider could address things just as effectively through a ride, but that's why they...

Continuing the work in the field, we headed out there this morning. Things actually started off better than yesterday - more relaxed. Had some really nice walking - it's amazing what you start to take for granted on a trained pony

Once again we worked through "one leg means move over, not go" *sigh* Fortunately this was a day where she got it quickly.

But this time, trotting was not really part of Catnip's game plan. I thought "we'll do a...

Miss Nip needs to continue to learn to work in the pasture. So, back out there this morning. It's like starting all over Trotting is sporadic, lots of head tossing, stop start. It was a bit frustrating, but given how relatively quickly she's progressed in the ring, I think if I concentrate on the field for a while, things will get to where they are in the ring.

One thing's for darn sure though, I'm waiting until the ring gets fenced in before I even think about cantering!...
