"The first International Gold Cup was held in 1930 at Grasslands Downs in Tennessee over a 4¼ mile brush course, similar to the English Grand National course at Aintree. That year, the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, then one of the world’s most gallant riders and sportmen, placed the spectacularly beautiful gold trophy in competition which is still awarded annually to the winner. After the Tennessee race meet ended end 1932, the event was moved to the Rolling Rock Hunt Meet course in Pennsylvania, a course built by General Richard King Mellon, who had won the 1931 race in Tennessee.

A rich history of international involvement characterizes the International Gold Cup Races, the highlight of the fall steeplechase season. The International Gold Cup itself, Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia, has had a long and interesting journey en route to its present home.

The extraordinary beauty of its setting in the Loyalhanna Valley, some 50 miles east of Pittsburgh, makes the Rolling Rock hunt race meeting one of the most splendid of its kind. There the blue autumn mists hug the Pennsylvania mountains, and the foliage is barely beginning to turn. The outdoor spectacle is gilded by the richest purses of any hunt race meet. Naturally, the best steeplechasers and timber horses are drawn to the site, and present there now are such top contenders as Richard K. Mellon's...

Freedom on Four Hooves
To The Love of The Sport !
At the gate, on a crisp fall morn’
The grass is dew laden, but the air is warm.
What a morning for a ride!
A whistle brings your horse to your side.
Into the barn, to get saddled up,
A pet for the barn cats, a pat for the pup.
A hop and your astride, a clip pity clop,
Stuff on a helmet, to cover your mop!
Break into a trot where the path meets the trees,...

True Love Takes Flight
In the hours, 'tween moonrise and dawn,
She is a woman, and he is gone.
Left to wander, empty and alone,
Till the sunrise, brings him home.
At the first light, she claims flight
Her feathers hide, all through the night.
His fur recedes, he stands up right
For he’s a wolf, when it turns night.
An Evil Priest, with lust in his heart,
Sold his soul, to the black arts....

The High Road
To those who walk the Road Less Traveled
Come, journey along with me,
The High Road is where we want to be.
It is the way to rise above
All the daily push and shove.
A bird’s eye view of all the strife,
All the sadness in a life,
Here the air is far more rare,
One’s view of life is crystal clear.
You can truly rise above,
View the world, through the eyes of Love.
Find joy in all the...
