Congrats! That must have been super exciting! Was it a cutting show? Bandit (we renamed Peppy..it wasn't working out) is doing great! He is really picking up on his transitions although he is a little scatterbrained at the lope! But he is a good learner and tries hard (even though he is a bit lazy at times!) Steering is going well too. Do you have any suggestions for ideas we can do?

Been busy at the horse shows. We got 1st Saturday, 2nd Sunday and won the class for the year end award. So, I've just been really busy getting ready for the shows.

How's the horse going in his training?

Haha!! Looks like you may have never got my response, being as how I put it on my OWN page!! I basically said that she is very smart, so it didn't take her very long to learn.

I'm working with an Arab now, and he is learning to neck rein. Taking him a little longer though. Same techniques.

Well thanks. Thats basically what I do. I use my legs A LOT when I ride so I think I do that almost automatically. I will have to try that nose thing once we progress along a while. Did it take you guys a long time?

What I do is basic from the start, but when I use a direct rein, I lay the opposite rein on the neck so they can get the correlation of the rein on the off side to going the opposite direction. I also use my leg on them up front or on the girth. That's the signal I use for them to move the shoulders only.

Another method is to walk them in a tight circle and they will pivot on their hind foot. That's the point that you stop and praise.

I also want them to tip their nose in the the direction they are turning, so later in the training, if I lay the rein on the left side, and they want to stiffen up or put the nose to the left, I bump the right rein. Same with the opposite side.

I used all of these methods, just in case the horse doesn't quite "get" the other method. It all comes out to the same result

Oh nice! so can I ask you some questions? Peppy is my first one so I am learning as I go. He has been saddle broke and bridle and plow reins mostly so right now we are working on steering and neck reining. What kind of training theory did you use for neck reining? I have some ideas but I'm just curious!

I started her period. LOL! As soon as she learned stop from the seat and a verbal whoa, and leg cues and neck reining (not perfect though), I just got her to follow the cow, stop when it stops, turn when it turns.

gotcha. well right now we don't even have cattle and I know nothing about cutting haha. But Peppy and I are just working on basic steering at the walk. I thikn everything is going smoothly so far. Yeah I thought it said he was a QH stud on the papers but who knows. I may have remembered it wrong. I want a copy of it so I don't have to keep looking at their house. Did you start that paint mare from green broke?
