- 10-14-2009 04:24 AM - permalinkBettyBootsyI never could find Comfrey leaves. I'm on my way out so it maybe awhile till I get back but be good and thank you!
- Flaxseed oil is your best bet for retensioning...but it must be a cold compress oil...10 to 20 mls for small horses and 20 mls for larger horses.
If you need to get the inflammation down the best thing you can use is comfrey leaves, workd like a charm in a few hours....altho I leave it on you 12 hrs.
Also great when your horse stock up....place around swollen leg...prickly side of leaf out and bandage...now the bandage will loosen and may even half fall off...so I recommend you use old bandages.
Hope that helps you. - thought I got the name right......glad to here his leg is healing....are you useing/giving him anything for it.
I have a great thing for retension ligament/tendons....so happy he not going to need the surgery.
I'm being good. cya - I'm Doing well...I have been really busy at work all week and haven't had time to get on here.....hows things your way and how is your boy doing....Moonshine, isn't it, sorry my bad....I'm hopless with the names.....

- (((sorry I was adding to the Disneyland thread)))
I'm not a vet and for the most part go by what a vet tells me, so I wouldn't even begin to guess on that. Part of horse ownership is always learning, so just because it hasn't happened to you or someone you know doesn't mean it couldn't happen...
This was what my mare looked like when I put her down at 28 years... she still had good years left, but like I said at least I know she went quickly and painlessly when she was still happy. She never wanted for anything and I think that's how it should be. If something had happened to her to where she did need medical attention and I couldn't afford it I would have done the same thing.

I've still got my other 3 horses... after everything happened my mom and I have a little place up in the desert and found new jobs, but at least we were able to keep the animals. We can't really afford them right now which I'm so stressed out about... They get the food they need, but right now not much else.
We just went through a month off of work and have been eating nothing but PB&J sandwiches and bean and cheese burritos. We've been back to work a month now and are still trying to catch up on bills. Unfortunately since we got an older trailer no one will lend money on it... so we're up _____ creek if you know what I mean. One of our main problems is our roof is slowly coming off after every windstorm, we can't afford to get another...
Right now I feel my horses are lucky to have someone that cares about them to see they're fed and watered and they're healthy. With the horse market the way it is right now there are horses that are much worse off... Out of my three I only have one that I would have any luck at selling... my 5 year old gelding.
The other two... people can't even give away healthy horses right now, so I know for a fact I couldn't find homes for them. One is 24 with leg problems and the other is 12 and has founder issues.
So I've already said if anything happens I'm going to have to put those two down. - I'm sorry you feel that way... maybe I'm a bit too trusting of people I've never met, but what I saw was someone hurting from the loss of a friend.
You can flame me all you want, but I myself have had to put down two perfectly good horses (in your opinion) because of them being in pain or lack of money.
I loved my horses and in my belief I did the best possible thing for both of them. I was also told by my vet that I did too.
My gelding got sick and after 2 weeks and over $800 and the vet telling me "it's not that, maybe it's this" followed by another test... and my horse loosing weight, with all his bones sticking out because he wouldn't touch his food... and getting bloody sores from throwing himself on the ground and thrashing even after he was constantly drugged (((Colic was the first thing thought of and ruled out)))... I said that was it, I couldn't leave him like that another day and told the vet to come out ASAP.
My first horse was a much more difficult decision. I still cry and miss her terribly. She was 28 and just hanging out in our backyard. I had said from the beginning she had a forever home with me, she was an awesome mare. A few years back everything went to he!! (excuse my language) for my family. Dad lost his job, parents divorced, we had to move beacuse we couldn't afford to keep our house... I thought we had to get rid of all our animals... My mare was in good health and looked great for her age, but she had a few small medical issues that made her upkeep expensive. She had no teeth so had a special diet, joint supplements for her arthritic leg, and very expensive eye ointment daily or her eyelid would gape open (from a tearduct that never formed). I couldn't bear the thought of giving her to someone and them not taking care of her like she deserved to be taken care of or her ending up in an auction for slaughter, so I had her put down.
I've seen too many older horses that were skin and bones and the owners say "Oh, they're just old, they're supposed to look like that. They're hanging in there just fine." I always argued with them and said I had a almost 30 year old that looked 12 and if they would just try to change their horses diet or try something and anything to get them healthier... or if that wasn't possible to just put the poor animal out of it's misery and be looked at like I was the one in the wrong... I didn't want that happening to my beloved friend. - WOW! I got a problem with this whole thing. Trying to be understanding and can't! We have a 30 yr old standing out the back door whos no where ready to die. He grew up with you and was that awesome and is all you can think of is pockets.
I'm sorry but no thats not cool. Our animals rely on us to help them. We have a **** load of horses that are throw aways with injuries. The latest was a church riding camp horse. 22 yrs old. Came up lame in her fetlock. Ole boy said he was going to put her down her fetlock was broke but didn't want to shell out the money for a vet or xrays. Well we got her it's a severed tendon and she will be sound for riding in a yr or less. You didn't even want a second opinion and since when is 26 really that old. Your pics he looked amazing for his age. You could of at least asked someone from HGS if they wanted him. Universities have payment plans. I'm sorry for your loss and maybe I don't see it your way but it honestly breaks my heart how so many people are quick to turn there back on there beloved animals over money. He deserved a chance. And what is joint supplements worse case legend injections and you complained about putting eye ointment in 3x a day. I give my 10 yr old joint supplements when hes training as a preventive. I hope I don't sound rude as some may take and I guess it's better hes not suffering but you whole thread doesn't add up.
I just wanted to say that I really didn't approve of your post at all... I don't like to give bad rep, but that post almost made me do it.
Not everyone is well enough off to spend large amounts on their animals... especially when it's not even known if the animal will recover. In this day and age when the economy is so badly off and people can hardly make ends meet I'm suprised anyone could be so callous.
I think the OP made the best decision possible. The horse was old, not healthy and sounds like she's in an area where it's next to impossible to get a vet out. IMO she did the kindest thing she could. She DID NOT leave the animal to suffer knowing she couldn't afford to get it better... and euthanizing is nowhere near cheap either... she DID NOT drug him and drop him off at an auction to be someone else's problem like so many others do...
I think you owe her an apology.
