Check out the markings on this girl:

She does have one blue eye so it's not just tobi at play here. Still, really unusual looking!

I'd bet these 2 are homozygous Tobi as well

The pinto Icelandics are fun to look at:

http://www.icelandichorse.is/colours.html

Frame and sabino aren't known in the breed, according to this page, so we're only seeing tobiano and splash. There's lots of "pure" tobianos, judging by the "no face white" factor. Some of them have quite a bit of white.

Hi
This is slightly off point but can I ask a question. Does it mean if your tobiano has a stripe/blaze on his face, he is not just a tobiano?
If it is the overo gene which causes the stripe, what about on solid, non paint horses, what causes them to have a stripe? Is it the same gene?

I have just looked at the APHA website and it says that tobiano can have a star or a stripe just like other horses and their picture of the tobiano clearly has a stripe.

Well, that is what I believe. That some form of "pinto" marking, causes white on horses, be it face, legs, or body. Splash, Frame, Tobiano, and all the various "Sabinos" that might be out there.

Don't rely on what the APHA says about markings. APHA is so wrong in most aspects of markings. Pity, since this is what the breed is about. Anyway, a Tobiano with white on the face most likely has something esle going on, other than just tobiano.

Yes, if a horse has a blaze, stripe, star, whatever, it has been caused by one of the overo genes.... splash, frame, or sabino... On solid horses, the white markings are also caused by one of the genes.

APHA does not care what the genetics are on the horse's pattern, they only make a generalization of what they think each pattern should look like.

Frame would not cause a blaze/strip/snip on a horse - Frame does not allow white to cross the centerline of the horse, top or bottom. So, anything that is on the front center of the face is Sabino and/or Splash.

A Tobiano-only horse will have a completely solid head. If it's not a double-dilute also, and there are blue eyes, then you can be pretty sure Splash has done that.

I disagree with JB on frame not putting normal face white on. I do think frame will put face white on.

But to answer the question if it has any marking on the head the horse isnt JUST tobiano, and is most likely also sabino as well if not frame or splash.

And yes as has been said do not trust APHAs color.

For those of you who do know APHA what would they register this foal as?

Ok, we'll have to agree to disagree since it isn't proven either way But if the rule of Frame is to have the white body "framed" by the dark color, how would it put white on the front of the face? I'm not talking about the cheek, I'm talking about somewhere down the centerline.

I don't know APHA terribly well, but I'd think they'd register him Tovero. I would suspect Tobi + Splash based on his presentation, and would rely on Frame from a test.
