I am sure you know OCD CAN be from feeding too, right? Why don't you change his diet and see how he does in a few months. You can always geld later. It won't hurt to just feed him a little less grain and see what happens.

Cleo was diagnosed with it at age 4 and the vet who did her pre-purchace exam and took a zillion x-rays 3 months ago at age 6 did not see any signs of it.

Yeah over feeding young horses can cause it as well.. I know in clydes, and maybe WBs (?) you can 'blow' out their knees/hocks from over feeding.

It is actually not such a BIG might... it is like Hip Dysplasia in dogs.. Environment and nutrition can play a part in bringing it on and expressing it, but it is currently very much felt to be genetic in reasons FOR expression. Unfortunately like HD in dogs, it is most likely going to be a polygenic form of inheritance and that makes it much harder to pinpoint for genetic testing purposes.

You definately can find particular lines which have a strong propencity in both Equines and Canines, for expression of OCD.

We're going to wait on gelding. We're going to see what happens with his hock to see if it's real OCD or psuedo.

There's something about trauma and Mars has had some spills on his right hind leg from running around when it's slippery...and a few on of them he was ouchy right afterward...
I think this is a good approach for now - you can always take 'em off later, but can't put 'em back on

Do get some information on "disappearing" lesions. No, I wouldn't be able to read the xrays, sorry I need to learn how to do that decently I'm assuming they were digital xrays, not just analog that were converted? If they weren't digital, that's the first thing I'd want. I'd also likely want a 2nd or even 3rd opinion on them, possibly from folks at Cornell and/or New Bolton, folks who see LOTS of these on a regular basis.

Anyway, I do think it's in your best interest to just wait for now and take followup xrays later. I WOULD also be looking at his diet and making sure it's high enough in copper and as low in NSCs as you can possibly make it.

Osteochondrotin Dessicans (may not have spelled absolutely correctly!) Basically in very simplisitc terms, it's when the cartiledge fractures off into small chips or fractures...

if you go to offa.org there is a good description of OCD
