I have worked with mares, geldings and studs. and I guess I don't really have a prefrence, I've had awesome success with all. I have saddle broke a lot of stallions. And they have all been very focused and learned quickly. I have two mares and they get bitter toward eachother. I think any horse can be trouble and any horse can wonderful whether its a stud or not. Its all in how they are trained!

I will say that personally, I like geldings much better, but can tolerate the gelding like mares. I have only delt with mini studs and all three were little monsters! I guess mares and geldings are equal...but studs equal bleh!

I personally love mares but I think geldings can be easier to work with. (depending on the horses)

You can find some outright mean and stubborn geldings out there just like you can find a mean and stubborn mare. I don't really work with studs but I've heard they're a pain.

I prefer geldings any day.... although I've known a few very loyal mares that would walk thru fire for their 'people'.

Ask a mare, tell a gelding.......

I absolutely love mares, but during season they can get really annoying.
Geldings are more often then not the ones who turn out to be something easy to work with and really willing to give you their all. Mares will usually show some attitude.

Studs are just fun to ride, but I would stay away from owning one. ;D

I am gonna have to go against the grain grain here. While I have admittadly only worked with about 8 or 10 stallions, I generally prefer them. I found that it is not so much about negotioating with them per se, so much as it is about being fair. In the few that I have worked have worked with they seemed to to have a finer line than mares or gelding between fair and unfair. If you were unfair with them they would stop listening and begin "arguing" or just plain be a PITA. So long as I was fair, they were brilliant to work with.

If you want a horse that is trustworthy and reliable a gelding all the way! (well, mostly... lol)

I've found that I almost get along with mares more than I do with geldings. Our personalities seem to be better suited it seems. But still, I do love my geldings, they are great fun!!

A great stallion is virtually unbeatable in the show ring. They have a presence that few mares and, imo, no gelding can match.

If you build a relationship with a mare, she will give you her all. A good mare has that "look at me" attitude that makes her stand out.

A good gelding is usually fairly steady and requires less of his rider than a stallion or mare.

All three have their benefits and drawbacks. For me, I love an amazing stallion but have had great experiences with stallions, mares & geldings. Talent is the critical factor.
