| Full Member | Mare's contribution to foal
I've been thinking about my little filly. Of course, she's still very young, but all I can see in her so far is her mom. Color, markings, personality, etc. Maybe I'll see more of her sire in her conformation once she gets older, but it's just like a carbon copy of mom right now.

They change so much as they get older. But you have to remember mom is the one raising them so they are bound to pick up traits from mom. I know mine sure do.

Indi, while similar to her mom conformationally ... has her dad's hind end. I would of like to have gotten more mass in that department. While her Mom may be the ugly matriach type ... Indi is the slow pokey type with the dull look on her face wondering why we do what we do. Her mom is upheaded and hot. Indi may think she can push around little geldings like her Mom, but she isn't really much of her mom's personality and I think that is a nice thing.

My mare is weak in her hip/butt area (it's very small for a QH). Teak fortunately got daddy's hip. Nice big butt! Let's see... otherwise he got neither's color (mom - sorrel, dad - dunskin) Teak Palomino He did get mommy's head. She's got a BIG, but very pretty head. He's more of daddy's size. Coco is 14.2 tops and Mo is 15.1. Teak is 4 years and about 14.3 at the withers and 15 hh at the butt (I'm hoping he will level out at 15hh soon and not be bum high. Temperment... a little more difficult. Coco is very easy going. Smart, doesn't spook at much. My observation of Mo's temperment is a bit biased because I usually saw him at breeding time when he was all excited. In his stall he seemed quite laid back, had a mouthiness problem. You could walk up and pet him, but better be careful cause he might try to bite. Otherwise he was quite a handful... I always put it too being a stud with not a lot of handling. Teak is like both of them tempermentally. He is smart and not much fazes him. If he's scared of something I just have to reassure him and he will walk right up to it. But he can be a bit of a but. Pushy and very mouthy... (I think that's more my fault not teaching him the right manners though)

Foals are never a half and half split between mom and dad. Well, I guess biologically maybe, but there's always the issue of prepotency which science totally doesn't understand. It's why some stallions throw near-carbon copies of themselves no matter what they are bred to, and some stallions seem to produce a filly almost identical to the dam. The mare will almost totally shape behaviors, though, because the young foals spend so much time with them. One of the many reasons I love Miss Ebony is that she teaches all of her babies to keep a stall neat and clean by pooping in one pile in the corner.
