Mares & Geldings ok to share same pasture?
My family has just recently gotten into horses. We have 3 geldings. They are currently sharing the pasture with our 6 mo. old pony (filly). We are about to acquire 2 mares. We have just come across some info that says mares and geldings should not share the same pasture. I am looking for advice on this from those that are much more experienced than we are.
I know a lot of people won't do it but I've done it. There's only one gelding here that absolutely cannot be pastured with mares, but he's proud cut. Other than that, I've never had any problems.
You will find a variety of views/opinions on this from the members on this board. Some say geldings and mares should never be in a pasture together, others will say they should be separated until well after the boys were gelded and some will say as long as the boys are geldings then you should be ok.
I can only relate my personal experience with this. I have never been to a stable that separated mares and geldings (colts and fillies are a different story). Currently my sister's gelding is in a field full of mares (only one other gelding) and everyone seems to get along fine. In fact, there was a time when he was in with mostly geldings (because most of the mares were pregnant and the barn keeps pregnant mares separate from the herd) and he would jump the fence to be in the same field as his favourite mares.
I have two mares and one wimpy gelding and they get along GREAT most of the time... the one mare is a B at feed time but other then that I have no problems
Opinions differ in this sort of thing.
This question brings two barns to mind; one being a barn that pastured all horses (except colts or stallions) together. It was a herd of about 30 horses, and they were fine. Of course there will be incidents with such a large group, but the horses were healthy, happy and content.
The other barn is the one I ride at now, and they separate the horses by gender. Mares with mares, geldings with geldings. Again, they seem content, healthy and happy.
It really depends on what YOU think is right for your horses. If you have a mare that wants to kill geldings everytime she's around one, or vice versa, you aren't going to want to put her in with geldings.
I agree completely, IMHO it depends on the horses involved as to whether or not they would work well as pasture mates.

The first barn, my mare fought like craaaazy with the other mares. That's why we had to leave.
The second barn, first she was pastured with a gelding and they got along, they really liked eachother except my mare chased him away from his food So she went to another pasture with a mare, they were alright, then a gelding came along and I never saw her go anywhere near him. (Everytime I took her out the gelding she used to be pastured with would call for her, it was so cute )
People make a big deal about pasturing by gender but honestly my mare would probably do best in a pasture with geldings. Right now she's pastured with our other mare and she picks on her at times but it's not too bad. They're better together than they are apart.
I think it all depends on the horse. You really can't say for sure "geldings and mares will be fine together" or "they'll beat the cra.p out of eachother" It completely depends on each horse.

I agree it depends on the horses ... some get along well together & others just don't.
I have a mare & gelding together ... he loves her, she tolerates him & is very alpha.
they have an occasional spat but nothing too serious.
