*sigh*. I am unfortunately in the mare club [lol]. So the reason for this post is, one of my friends told me a while back that mare need their private parts cleaned just like gelding get their sheathes cleaned. Now, I already knew that you have to clean out the gunk that builds up on and in-between their teats, but... do mare require any other 'cleaning'? I was once told that you actually should clean out the vaginal area, which I do almost everyday, I just spray some water on the exterior parts, but are you supposed to clean anything inside there, because... I may run into a problem consider my mare... is a MARE. Haha. Also, even if you're not planning to breed, is it a pointless thing to get a vet or repro specialist out to examine, kindof like women have their obgyn? Because my mare goes into heat more than most mares, atleast that's what I think. She goes into heat any time she's in a group of horses, at shows, and.. when left at the barn, usually every 2 to 3 weeks. She's not messy about it, but will spend all of her stall time walking up beside a stall wall, and slamming her hip sideways into the wall and just stand there pushing against the wall with her outside back hind.. it's really gross. She will also nip at herself sometimes when she's doing the nasty with the wall. So, this is sortof a conglomerate thread about my silly mare, who could possibly have some issues. Does anyone else have a horse that does this? I'm really at a loss, hah. She's got quite an interesting history as far as hormone treatments and marbeling [as a 2 and 3 year old! |

Oy...tricky question. I'd like to know the answer too lol! I have 3 mares, well down to 2 now and I have never actually thought to clean INSIDE the vaginal area, but I do the same thing you do, wash the exterior parts and their teats. Of my 3 only 1 has very obvious heat cycles, and it seems to me that she's constantly in heat! She's very bad about it, squirting all over the place, some days bad enough that I have to be careful where I stand while grooming I had a little mini gelding out with her for a while and she drove the poor thing crazy, now I keep her with mares and it seems to be more subtle now but maybe its just me? I dont really know if there's a health reason behind this but I can tell you I worked at a boarding barn for several years and we had one mare who would throw herself against the wall in the exact same way you described here. I had never seen that before and it was shocking at first, but then I got used to her and would try and distract her with hay or another way to occupy her time |

See, I tried to distract Annie with treats, and it worked. She ate them. While humping the wall. >.> The worst part to the wall humping, is... when she kicks out with the back hind that's holding all her weight onto the wall... and falls over. I sound like a mean mommy, but... every darned time, I crack up and Annie just looks at me like she knows I'm laughing at her. I don't claim to own the brightest horse. Sometimes it can get dangerous with mine. If she's been in a herd of horses, say... her buddies, at the neighbor's place, and I get on to ride her, and her girlfriend is in the other pasture... it's a bad set up. If the other mare whinnies, my mare will do just about ANYTHING to get over there, including taking off sideways with me... Grrr. |

My mare is very marish if not pastured with all mares. She is right now with all geldings an is a *itch....big time. I've had the vet out to examine her and found nothing out of the ordinary with her. It may be a good idea to have the vet out to make sure everything is working right. They will also have suggestions for you, like using regimate, which is rather spendy. You can try over the counter stuff like mare magic, it's a calming agent for mares. I bought it for my mare and will start using it this winter. I've heard good things about it. As for cleaning them. No I have NEVER heard of cleaning them out. Yes clean the outside if needed but never inside. good luck! |

I clean my mares teats regularly but never have washing inside her. I guess I never thought of it because she's not with other horses or been exposed to males at all. So never really thought of it. You can never tell when she's in heat except her first heat of the season. Then she winks at any guy that comes near her!! Otherwise she's the same all the time

Don't clean inside! You'll do more harm than good - introduce bacteria, possibly bruise/tear the tissue (it's surprisingly delicate), **** your mare off! I use baby wipes my mare's rectum and vulva. When I get the smegma out from between her teats and she lifts her leg and spreads em wide and almost trembles. She LOVES having her bo=obies cleaned!

LOL. You telling me about your horse loving the teats getting cleaned reminded me of a funny story. It was a quiet day at the barn. I had just given Annie a bath and brought her back into the barn and put her in the cross ties. I decided to pick the smegma from her teats because I hadn't done it in like a week, and she builds that stuff up quick. So I'm facing the opposite direction of her, so that my face is pointing back at her bum, and my bum, is pointing towards her head. I was busy getting every little bit out, and all of a sudden, I feel Annie's upper lip scratching my butt. Haha. It was so quiet, and I didn't hear or sense her bending her head around, so ofcourse I screamed and bolted forward, and she spooked at me 'spooking'. Pahaha. Anyways, that was completely off topic. I figured I shouldn't clean INSIDE her vagina... I was just wondering because, like I said, someone told me that I was supposed to, and I was thinking.. what in the world. Aren't they just like people when it comes to that... I mean... they've got the same bacterial balance to keep up.. wouldn't washing it all out cause an upset? But yeah, thanks guys for clearing that up :] |
