Drugging can fail too.... his approach of an older maiden might be the issue, she is herd savy, he needs to( if controlable) approach at the shoulder and talk to her a little more on the ground, some cases if your brave enough turn them out, there are risks for that but he is likly to change up his technic to win her over, more so then the only option your giving them.... I have had a mare come to be bred and was US a 40mm and we drugged her so much my friend was convinced she was going to fall over and also twitched and I said dont let her fool you, as soon a my guy got near she woke up QUICK, i think we had used torp/romp had previously tried demosadan....there was NOOOO getting this mare bred naturally and owner didnt want to foot the bill for AI, so she never got bred, their call. Oh well... I wont let my boys get hurt for that no matter what when there is technology to prevent it. He is a performer and I dont need him crippled.

Paxo, the mare's not a maiden. This is her 2nd breeding. Rompum will easily cause a horse to fall over so I hope that wasn't what you were using.

We had this issue with a maiden TB mare this year. First, although she seemed to be in heat, she was kicking and kicking hard. She had 2 shots of Lute, and then she came in FLAMING HEAT! She was still a little scared when he actually mounted, so we used dromosedan and we have a baby on the way.

i agree with the go for the AI I have had the same trouble and the drugs just didnt work one other question if this mare hasnt been inspected by a vet how are you going to know if she has a venereal disease or not?? has she been swabbed to check if she is clean?? all mares should be swabbed before access to a stallion so they dont pass disease on.. good luck mate

That's certainly not what any of the Vets here, including several Repro specialists would ever use.

Yea, its just us crazy east coasters LOL 80% of the time they used Demosadan, but there were a couple they went for more umph to take the edge off , worked for one and not the other one of the ones I seen them do, but they are both repro clinics . So I trust them , one was on Ocala and they deal with live cover alot with TBs all over there and tracks. | |

When doing live cover, we will tie a leg up with a scotch hobble, but absolutely will not use breeding hobbles. Mares can and do kick while hobbled and handlers can become complacent when a mare has them on. Additionally, we've seen some incredible wrecks where a stallion has gotten hung up in them while dismounting and if you think a recalcitrant mares is nasty without hobbles on, you should see one with hobbles on that a stallion is tangled in!! AI the mare. If the mare owner doesn't want the expense involved, is the stallion owner willing to accept the expense of the damage potentially done to their stallion? And, if they think spending a couple hundred bucks to have the stallion collected and the mare bred is expensive, why the heck are they breeding at all?? That is literally just the tip of the iceburg on the costs that will be inccurred. Personally, it's our responsibility here to insure that all animals are handled and managed safely. Breeding a mare that is dangerous that can be bred AI (Not a TB for example where they MUST be bred live cover to be eligible for registration) is the responsible thing to do. Risking injury to handlers and stallions is totally irresponsible. Totally! Even drugged, mares can be dangerous, either because they can still kick or because they are unstable. Definitely NOT worth the risk for the price of a stud fee. Hope the above helps. Kathy St. Martin Equine Reproduction Short Courses http://www.equine-reproduction.com |

Well, like I have said before, the mare is owned by a cousin. We did not charge a stud fee, we only breed to our own mares or family horses such as in this case. We could AI and the cousin probably would pay for it but we are not certain she wants to go through all that for a foal when she could just get one from us when our mares foal next spring or get the one we have right now. The mare is a really nice mare that would put a nice foal on the ground but not at the risk of injuring our stallion. We have bigger plans for him in the future. Thanks for all the suggestions, she is coming out of heat so we have decided to try again when she comes back in and if she won't stand, then there will be nothing else done. I don't want to risk hurting Dusty.
