Hmmm, 15 is up there for breeding and particularly for reception issues (tumors, cysts etc) and then throw in the fact her last breeding was traumatic.

I would definitely AI her and I wouldn't drug because a drugged horse with a traumatic memory experience is a much more dangerous horse than not drugged.

That would be all fine and good to not drug her but if she's not receptive to the stallion, even in stocks a mare that's not "properly secured" runs a huge risk of hurting the tech inseminating her and I for one can personally tell you having your arm almost to your shoulder is not where you want to be if a horse decides it wants to be a problem.

Now, on the flip side of that, she may be just fine with someone AI'ing her (and a speculum is always another option to keep the arm safe from harm) too.

I totally agree Acme and in this case I would be questioning even breeding her with her age and trauma issues etc.

Tanya, on another thought... do you know what color the other stallion was that she was bred by? Some stallions have quirks about certain color mares so maybe your boy brings back bad memories for her? Blindfolding her may be another thing to try, at least try it with teasing her.

Really? I think he was a palomino for some reason but I am sure he was not black or the very dark buckskin like Dusty. I truely believe that it is because of the past and this mare can be cranky with other horses, mares or stallions.

Yep, have seen friend's stallions refuse to mount grey mares and have seen mares refuse a stallion of a certain color, odd, but hey... we all have our likes and dislikes right?

If she's that much of a *****, I wouldn't even breed her but it is lookin like the big "D" (dormosedan) is going ot be your best bet next to AI

She is only like that with other horses not people. She really is a nice mare and would make a great foal with Dusty.

are you able to tease her and him behind a wall or stall until she is ready and has gotten all the kicking and squeeling out of her system?

also, I cant see how drugging would work. Ive never seen it done, but in my head, it would seem that the mare would have to be quite sedated to stand nicely for him, but with the weight of him would have a hard time standing and may get hurt.

This is my concern too. I really think drugging for cover is only safe if you have a breeding chute to support the mare, but even then she could simply collapse.

Queen was this same way with that paint stud Double-barreled the stud just inches from his prized jewels. Broke hobbles. They tried lightly drugging her but that didn't stop her.

Equine Repro sent me a great PM about this, but I don't have it anymore (this was last year). Some mares just can't be live covered. Might be worth PMing
