Hey, that is an idea! And yes, we had him in the stall next to her and that is what brought on her heat, until we did that, she could care less about him.

You might want to ultrasound her for ovarian tumors/cysts too, they won'[t stand if they are present (although they are rare). What is the age of the mare?

If she has been hurt before during breeding the only way to get her over it is to drug her... sorry to say. It really has nothing to with her being in heat but her being in fear of being attacked.

When you say hobbles... you mean as in two hobbles... at the same time... that are made for breeding... correct? Instead do you know how to make a scotch hobble? Using a rope cinch and a long heavy cotton rope?

Or do you know anyone with a breeding chute?

Unfortunately once again I really hate to say even if you did have a breeding chute... It would save the stallion but might cause the mare to hurt herself because the the previous trauma.

I have also had mares that just did not like that particular stallion so you had put one on the nose and another on the tail... much like you have to have the jenny around to get the jack to breed the mare...

That is another thought. She is 15, maiden, but in EXCELLENT health and condition. I won't breed maiden mares over the age of 12 but this one is a really nice mare and the foal would be an outstanding reining prospect, with a good possiblity of color. Dusty is a very dark buckskin and Bubbles is a red dun.

From what I hear, the last time they tried to breed this mare it was very traumatic for her. She came back with severe halter marks on her head and was quite timid after words and she never took. So drugging may very well be a good option.

Yes, they used hobbles that were designed for breeding and she broke them. How do you make a scotch hobble? This mare uses both back legs as double cannons when she kicks at him. We do have a friend that has a breeding chute but I really don't want either one of them to get injured.

Tanya, I'd either collect or drug her. Anything beyond that I personally feel is too much a risk for her, you, Dusty and anyone else that may be around. I sure wish you were closer! Mi maniquí de la cría es su maniquí de la cría LOL

Have you tried taking him over to her stall and letting him hang his head IN to her stall to tease her?

Have you had a breeding soundness exam done on the mare? At that age being maiden there could be some real issues.

Before AI ( since it is not an easy task for this particular situation) I think a breeding soundness exam would be a good idea for this mare. Given her age and the previous problems with her settling it would be my first step.

Druging her would be my next option if AI is not available and if AI is avaialble and she is sound to breed give that a whirl.

As far as I am aware, the cousin did this before they brought her to our house. I may check with her this evening. We did not have the exam done because it is not our mare and the cousin was told she would have to be responsible for all the medical exams and tests on her mare. I really feel all of this is because of the last time they attemped to breed her and because it went so badly. All the information I have is second hand on this mare and the previous attempt so there could be something I am missing.
