Mare won't stand for breeding-ideas anyone?

We are attempting to breed our cousin's mare to our stallion. This is a really nice mare and they really want to breed to Dusty. Well, the mare fianlly has gotten ready and yet she won't stand for our stallion. She keeps kicking the **** out of him. We tried breeding hobbles, she broke them. They tried twitching her but that didn't work either. Someone had suggested drugging her but I don't know if that is safe either.

This mare had a bad experience the last time they tried to breed her and we believe that is why she is behaving the way she is. Poor Dusty, he doesn't know what to do. He has always been good about mounting the mares, we have done 2 this year, my mares, and he was great and they both stood for him perfectly. This mare is beating him up and last night I told them if she even acts like she is gona kick, we are not doing it.

Any ideas?

Have you teased her long enough, are you sure she is in STANDING heat?

AI. If she is genuinely at her most receptive stage and still kicking H E double hockey sticks out of the stallion then you are not going to be able to hand breed her without seriously stressing her (and him) out. AI is really your only option at this stage.

Tanya, Dormosadan works wonders for them and it's safe to use when breeding is involved. Did you try using a lip chain on her? Was Dusty coming up direct from the back or from the side and will she let him nuzzle her and lick on her or no?

Yes, this mare is in full blown standing heat.

I agree, she might not be truly ready.
have you had the vet out to see what size is her folicle? do you know if she is really ready to be bred?
I have worked at breeding farms, and we never even hand bred the mares until they had a good sized soft folicle. we also twitched EVERY mare for the safety of the stallion.
as Lou said, you will probably have to AI the mare if she is that bad to breed, or try the dormosedan ( great stuff )

I hope that is not the case, we do not have access to any AI collection equipment.

I wasn't there, but I was told they did use a lip chain on her. He was coming from the side but she will start kicking before he gets close enough to nuzzle her.

Haul him up We can collect! Shove it in a little white box and off ya go. Have you tried stalling them next to each other (not over night or anything but enough that she can get to know him on her own terms)? That may really help! I know it did with your little Buckskin and Beefcake!

That was my first thought that she was just not quite ready, but I watched last night and that mare should be standing for him. No, we have not had the vet check her folicles, that is a thought however.

We may be giving this Dormosedan a try.
