If the mare is not accepting the stallion and especially if she really looks to be in heat then she needs checked by a vet. Perhaps if you insist on that and since your friend is the one wanting to breed she should pay for it then she will decide it's not worth it.

That's an excellent idea! If your friend is just looking for her stud "to get some" as you put it, I doubt she will be wanting to spend lots of extra money on vet bills. Tell her you insist that the mare be checked by a vet each time before breeding... and ultrasounded after. Believe me it adds up FAST! My mare had twins the first year, the vet pinched them off and we tried to keep breeding her. Didn't work, but I still had the vet bills from checking to see if she was in heat, if she was pregnant... I should have just waited until the next year in the first place. She got pregnant right off the next breeding season.

I probably spent a good $1000 on vet bills trying to get her pregnant.

While I would definetly have a vet out to check on your mare and while I question the reasons for breeding. It's true that some mares are truely in heat but they require some sweet talk from the stallion before they will let him breed her. Basically they are playing hard to get. I don't know how the mare is being breed (wether you are trying to breed in hand w/ hobbles w/o hobbles or trying to pasture breed etc)sorry if you mentioned the method, I missed it. But you may want to consider pasture breeding, it will help the mare relax and be more open to breeding. I would suggest that the pasture is a large one that way it is harder for the mare to corner the stud and hurt him. Although injuries are rare in a pasture breeding situation.

My old mare Bonnie aka the princess. Would go into heat but would try to kil every stud I introduced her too..
As I got more expencive stauds, she got nicer..lol I finally didnt breed her, as I figured it would be a $5000.00 breed fee that would finally make her happy.. lol
Good luck
