Exclamation Mare coliced because of protein change in feed

I feed compete 10% protein but they also make a 14% protein and the feed store accidentally loaded me the 14. I fed half the bag before I realized the difference(It looks the same). Then Abby laid down and began rolling side to side. She'd get up and then lay right back down and try to roll. I got her up and we started walking. I gave her 5ccs banamine then had to give 5 more 6 hours later. She was in terrible pain in her belly. She is fine now I guess I caught it early but why does the increase in protein cause so much pain? Could it be deadly? I have learned my lesson and will double check the feed when they load it from now on. By the way Abby is a 3 year old philly.

I'm really glad she is OK! If she is ok now, I don't think it's deadly but if you kept feeding it or you cought her late, it might have been.

The protein in not the only difference between the two feeds, there are others as well (I don't know what, but something else besides the protein percentage must change). If you had already fed half of the bag, then it is very possible that that was not what caused her to colic as she'd already been on it for some time.

How much exercise was she getting? I have seen it happen once. But I questioned whether that was it. However; if she was not getting enough exercise and the protein amountage built up without processing into their system fast enough they can and will.

Well there were others eating from that bag also they had been on it for two days. There were no other changes except for the feed. But like you said it could have been anything. I thank goodness for that banamine, it made her feel good enough to ride it out. I am also very thankful to this site and the people here! You guys are great!

when I said "ride it out" I didn't mean literally. As far as exercise I am afraid that lately she hasn't gotten much, both of my girls have had pneumonia and my 2 year old is only happy if I am holding her. I have started Abby under saddle and I got all the way on her for the first time a week ago. When I climbed up I looked at her eyes and they were closed, then she let out a big yawn this riding stuff is no sweat for her she thinks!

I'm glad to hear she's doing better. It was a good thing you were around to catch it in time.

I will have to agree here. If it is the feed then more than likely the problem was caused by the ingredient used to raise the protien, not the protien level per say.
How many days was she on the higher protien feed before she showed the signs of colic?
