Mare almost killed foal

Hey,
Well my neighbors have a mare that had a foal and the mare woldn't have anything to do with the foal and she almost killed the foal. They are having to feed the foal every 2 hrs. Why do mares do this? They are wanting to get rid of the mare for free, they don't won't her anywhere near the foal. I would take the mare if she wasn't a dangerous horse to people, but I don't know if she is dangerous to people but i will find out.

Was it her first foal? How much handling did they do to the foal after the birth?

my mare done the same thing! It was her first foal and we had to have the vet come out to fix her and the foal up and also sedate her to let the foal get some milk! After she was sedated she calmed down a lot and we no longer had any problems with her

My mare did the same thing. We weren't there for the birth, but when we came in the morning Stormy (her foal) was right up against the stall dor with Star (the mare) in the other corner. Star lunged at her a couple times and won't let her nurse so we had to separate them. For the first day or so we held Star still to let Stormy nurse. After that she was fed on formula.

we don't know if it was her first foal, or if it was just a difficult birth. We still don't know what happened.

If it is her first foal, this is not uncommon... she really should be given the chance to bond safely.
